 Left thumb callous
Author: leonardA

I know everyone gets a callous on the right thumb from holding the clarinet, but I also have one on the left side of my right thumb. When I play I don't feel the thumb rubbing against anything except the register key. Is that enough to create a callous. I guess so, but just wondering if everyone else has this.

If your right thumb is resting on your register key, you play in a rather unorthodox way. =]

If you meant your OTHER thumb, I can't think of a reason for it to callous there, and I've never experienced it.

You might want to reword that, friend.

I have a small area of calloused skin on the left side of my left thumb, right next to my thumb nail. I recall the discomfort that preceeded it some months ago as I was returning to regular practicing, and was working on throat notes. I think callouses are more obvious on some people's skin than others - I've a cracker on my right thumb, and another where I support a pen when I write.

I've got a callous on my left thumb at the corner of my thumbnail right where I operate speaker (and 8ve) keys, so that's what I put it down to, and every now and then I have to trim it.

But my right thumb is fine as I've always used thumbrest cushions.

I used to have a callous on my left thumb. Recently I started putting tape on the register key to get better grip. The callous has since gone away.

Sorry, I meant to refer to a calloous on the left side of my left thumb.
