Hi,
I played clarinet years ago into college, and my son is now going to start playing (5th grade). I want to purchase a somewhat inexpensive (but decent quality) wood clarinet for him and found local possibilities:
Selmer Signet for $150 or a Selmer cl200 with new pads and cork for $425
I am waiting for info from the seller of the Signet as the exact model (100, Special or Soloist), and I haven't played either horn yet.
I want to get him an instrument that will enhance his learning, rather than hold him back due to poor tonality, etc. Any experience or opinions on the quality of either horn model would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Jen

Hi Jen,
I don't have any experience with the cl200, but I can say that the Signet Soloist is a terrific instrument. Tunes well, sounds great and extremely well made.
Best of luck!

Thanks. I have my doubts that the Selmer is a Soloist (unfortunately). It is more likely just a 100.
I also could purchase a LeBlanc Normandy 4 for $400 that has been completely overhauled. I thought that price seemed a little high for the Normandy 4. Anyone have any comments?
Thanks
Jen

"somewhat inexpensive (but decent quality) wood clarinet"
If you mean $400 or less "decent" becomes subjective. A non-wood clarinet in this price range is more realistic.

Bob,
I certainly understand your point about the price, you do tend to get what you pay for. On the other hand, I have seen many posts on this forum where people have found good quality wood instruments for $400 or less.
I have the options mentioned in my above post--is it your opinion that a plastic clarinet would be a better instrument for my son to learn on than a Selmer Signet, Selmer cl200 or a LeBlanc Normandy 4?
Thanks again for your help!
Jen
