 Update on Bass Clarinet
Author: DLE

Hi. I live in the UK and am trying to rent a Bass clarinet. Doesn't sound that hard does it? However, I am having no end of problems in trying to rent one. I've been to my 2 local music centres and between them, they have 4 which are all being used. I then when to my local music shop and they said that they had to order one in to be used - and then it had to be BOUGHT!!! I've also asked my clarinet teacher if I could borrow hers - no comment (hardly).
So, I've tried almost everything short of one more shop, and travelling off to the Capital City of music itself - London.
Can anybody tell me anything that could save me from this agonizing journey?

Have you looked on EBAY, bass clarinet [search]? That might be your best avenue to obtain a B C, but BE CAREFUL! Don

A bass clarinet has an almost s-shaped goose neck that connects to the mouthpiece and a metal bell that curves upward. An alto clarinet, which is somewhat smaller, also has the upward-curving bell, but its neck has one downward bend. Soprano clarinets, which are commonly called just clarinets, are straight.

This doesn't cover every member of the clarinet family in detail, but the ones usually used in high school.

Hi,

I live in London, and trust me it is just as hard if not harder to rent them here. I tried around 8 music shops and my local music group all of which didn't have them or had maybe 1 or 2 which were on hire already!
What i did is decide to buy one as if your serious it is a good investment in my opinion! I got mine from the Loot, i bought it for £300, it is a EVETTE & ... and i have been told its an excellent price!
Hope ive given you some ideas!

S.Koumas!

SK & DLE-

In the US, many schools own expensive instruments such as a Bass Clarinet because the average students can not afford their own. You might check any nearby schools and colleges that have a music program to see what is available. If they have one that is not in use, you might be able to borrow it on a short-term loan.

Also, when an instrument reaches a certain age or needs major repair, the schools may just sell them and buy new ones. Check to see if any are for sale, that might be economical to repair.

Sorry Fred, the schools over here don't have as much money as your schools do in the US!
To Don and Lindy, What in the name of .... is EBAY?????
To S.Koumas - I hear you and I've alrady thought about buying a clarinet for an unusually cheap price somewhere - the question is where?! And, how do I tell if the one I have bought is of good quality?
- Am posting this as a new topic as well so people don't miss me in the rush of topics.
Thanks alot,
Dave.

Dave - EBAY.com is an on-line US auction site where for [generally] a week, items such as musical insts. [and everything else] can be bid on. It can be searched under general or specific terms , such as bass clarinet [some 20-40 postings usually, where clarinet usually has 500-1000!!]. I mentioned it principally for you to see a variety of insts and their "going" prices [mainly US]. A potential bidder-purchaser is handicapped since he/she must depend on pictures and seller-descriptions [and E mail answers] which may conceal defects, so there is much risk. I buy infrequently, and have about 1/2 to 3/4 satisfaction, so caution is advised. Others [andI] usually consider viewing as educational. Luck, Don
