Does anybody know what type of barrel shifrin was using when he made his copland/brahms/weber recordings?

In recent shots http://www.cmnw.org/images/press/shifrin_rocks.jpg, http://sitemason.sewanee.edu/files/iYxGFO/press497.jpg/main.jpg he's using a Backun barrel (and bell), and what looks like a Buffet body.

In older shots, he's using what looks like a straight Buffet setup http://www.cmnw.org/images/press/shifrin_david04RGB.jpg.

As I recall, his Copland, Brahms and Weber recordings are several years old, so he's probably playing a Buffet barrel. However, at his level, everyone plays custom-tweaked equipment, so it's nothing you would find simply by ordering a Buffet barrel.

Whatever it was at the time it was only one small part of how he sounded. It's the player themselves plus the total equipment that makes a player sound like they do, not one item. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457
A little Mozart. (on a Backun barrel, and bell)

Come on Ed, it's totally the ligature! Which everyone on this board should now know that the ligature is way more a factor in an artist's sound than even the reed it holds. I've heard it whispered that if you can find one of those Kaspar ligatures that you don't even need a reed!

Ofcourse equipment is only a tool for a means to creating a unique sound, I was simply curious

and don't even get me started on how much a thumbrest cushion changes your sound. oh boy.

I don't think David Shifrin needs to worry about his barrels with his skill level and beautiful sound. I have his Weber recordings...such an amazing sound.

Its all a part of the total package.

Do I sound better on a coco barrel than standard? Answer is yes. It does make a difference, but minor in comparison to tonal concept.

Unless your tonal concept and physiology is the same as shifrin, you won't approach sounding like he does.

Who wants clones anyway, so that's a good thing.

There is nothing wrong with Kevin's question. It doesn't indicate he is attributing exaggerated significance to barrels. There is long list of professonals using high end equipment. If Kevin hears something that might be attributable to a certain ligature then all the power to him. No one knows for sure.

After 279,000 bulletin board postings, I'm STILL waiting for the day someone asks what type barrel is used by Acker Bilk?

...GBK

I actually just played a gold plated instrument, and found that I didn't even need a mouthpiece or reed to play. . .or even a mouth.
I just set that baby down, put some music infront of it, and thought really hard, man it sounded so good!

Beer? (though I'm not really familiar with Acker Bilk playing much at all)

>> However, at his level, everyone plays custom-tweaked equipment

I guess that depends on the definition of "his level" and "custom-tweaked equipment".

I thought I read somewhere that Shifrin is or at least was using Yamaha CSG clarinet.
