I phoned Charles Bay a few days ago to ask a question. By the time I hung up the phone I would have sworn he was the world's greatest expert on what makes horns play. After awhile I recovered somewhat from the persuasive spell that he cast over me, but I'm curious: Have any of you had experience with clarinets (especially bass clarinets) modified or made by him? What are your observations?

I haven't played one of his basses but I recently bought a bass mouthpiece from him that I'm pretty happy with.

I have two experiences, spaced over about 30 years. Mr. Bay worked over a Buffet Bb I bought when I was in college - I still play it. He adjusted and tuned it and I have been very happy with that "old" clarinet. I recently was in the market for a new A clarinet and after trying many Buffets, Yamahas and Selmers, went with a Patricula A on which Mr. Bay had made many changes. I love the horn and could tell the difference from the stock Patriculas at the ClarinetFest 2000 this summer.

Mr. Bay has an EXCELLENT reputation from way back when & is still doing his thing. Mouthpieces (I own an "Ithaca"), Reeds (yes, his very own brand), Ligatures & other accessories, & his own clarinets & modifications of other manufacturer's sticks. mw
