1. what exactly is refacing a mouthpiece? what is done to the mouthpiece?
2. How do you know if your mouthpiece needs refacing?
3. How is it possible to reface a mouthpiece without the person who plays it?
4.....I have a 5RV Lyre profile 88 mouthpiece that I like a lot. The only problem is that the bottom of the reed never lays on the table straight. If I put it on straight, then the tip of the reed is off. Does this mean it needs refacing? Also, my last mouthpiece same kind, was the same way. How could that be? Is it something I should fix or just always put the reed on a little crooked and it wont matter?

No, position of reed heel doesn't indicate the need for refacing. Align the TIP and don't worry about the heel (unless misalignment is pronounced).
1. Ranges from flattening table and adjusting curve to reboring chamber, reshaping baffle (plus above). Plus more, if imaginable. Regilding, the works. Adding refacer's signature and favorite pet's name.
2. I say there is what I can an "instability," a tendancy to chirp or to whistle. The sound is edgy and tending toward antagonism rather than cooperation with the mouthpiece.
3. For serious music students and pros, I'm sure they insist on in-person refacings. Amateurs live with Priority Mail and email.
I love your direct questions. We need to learn to ask them more often. Like, "What does Kaspar-style REALLY mean."

Oh, you just remove the mouthpiece from the person's mouth.
