He has a great technique for a 12 year old, maybe even for an older teen ager. The piece, though not musically profound, does have some significant musical ideas and meaning. But he doesn't have an inkling what they might be...as he matures in a few or not so few years he probably will; but right now he's just a technical curiosity. Julian Bliss has grown into some musical artistry, let's hope Michael does too.
It was the astonishing genius of Sarah Chang at 12 years that she intuitively understood the master works she performed.

He seems a lot more tense than he has in past performances.
Like I said when it came to his Weber Concertino performance...I don't think he has the lung capacity to add the finesse that a piece like this needs. That's one huge disadvantage of being a technique child prodigy on a wind instrument.
He's still better than I am technically though...and 6 years younger...

The Weber performance was 2 years ago and he wasn't nearly as good. From 10 to 11 though was a huge difference.
He got a higher caliber teacher too.
I disagree about the lung capacity. Of course he has less than he will when he is older, but he certainly can play the work. If you hear him play the defalla variation you wouldn't question his breath control.
Except for Juilian Bliss I haven't heard anyone that age play nearly that well. Figured Julian was just a freak of nature and that it couldn't be done by anyone else that young actually.
There have been super prodigies on Flute that young who were at least that good, but not on Clarinet! (that I was aware of)
Michael does a lot of other stuff including is a 4th degree black belt. He practices 1 hour a day during the week and 2 on the weekend. So were not talking about a kid who practices 2 hours and 4 on the weekend.
Amazing in my opinion.

Not only is it amazing, it's healthy! This kid is a real talent, and 7 hours of practice per week is providing good payoff. He can always increase it later on, but at age 12 I'm glad to hear that he gets to have a childhood.

I find that the biggest problem with Michaels playing is the intonation. In this recording it is less good that in the earlier recordings.
David,
I Don't belive that he is practicing one hour a day , this level is more like 3-4 hours a day.
Any way - he was exposed too soon and even now he is not ready to be exposed. I've seen so much of that in Israel with young violin players. So many teachers were trying to repet the great success of Elona Fehr (Perlman, Zukerman, Mintz and many other amazing violin players).

Talent is talent. Who are we to question the amount of practice? One hour is absolutely believable.

in his youtube comment, he does mention that he practices 1 hour a day and 2-3 hours a month before a performance. I think he is going to be an amazing young clarinetist in the future. I don't have any criticism on his playing, considering his age he is an outstanding clarinet player. Intonation and musical analysis will come to him naturally.

It would be nice to hear more dynamics from this young fellow..everything seems at the wall so to speak. I also think he needs a bit more work on shaping phrases but this will come in time...Bliss seemed to have more refinement at this age but that is merely subjective. The biggest thing for this little fellow is to keep studying.

"High power" teacher?? I would say, "lucky" teacher to have a student such as this. What a pleasure it must be. I have had students that no power on Earth could motivate to excell like Han Kim.

I prefer Bliss version, with 12 yrs too. Better sound, better intonation, better emisions, better mechanism... better all, lol.

Han doesn't have to be a competition with Julian Bliss. I'd bet that Julian
has had more opportunities living in the UK for exposure than being in
Seoul. That's just a guess. I do know that Korea is big, big time into the
concept of Prodigies. So he might get a ton of exposure like Julian did.
Performing in the Tokyo Clarinet Convention is already getting it.
No way to ever know how a player will turn out, what opportunities they
will have, make, etc. and what life situations will occur than may affect
their career playing. Certainly worth watching though!

I honestly don't see why it matters if Han Kim is better or worse than Julian Bliss. . .
In any case, most of these young musicians are only in the light because of 'lucky' exposure. None of us would have heard of Han Kim if his videos weren't put up on youtube (by him) and we wouldn't have heard of Julian Bliss at that age if he hadn't had the chance to play for this outdoor concert.
The two would have been just as talented and proficient, we just wouldn't know. I'm sure there are more people like this in the world.
