Where do you want to send it for overhaul? For this model, it might not be worth to send to U.S.A..

I take it you are in Indonesia. I suggest you keep asking where local, established teachers and players get their instruments serviced. (Flute and sax players included perhaps)

Or you could track down the Yamaha factory in Indonesia, that makes clarinets, and ask them if they know of any reliable local repairer.

If you can find no technician in Indonesia, then it may be cheaper (freight considered) to get it done in Australia or NZ than USA.

I certainly would not choose any repairer advertising on the internet, especially in another country, unless they come with excellent testimonials, preferably from people with whom you have somehow established some trust.

The standard of workmanship is far more important than price, and often there is little correlation.

According to the info next to your user name you are in Indonesia (but that's not always accurate). Maybe it will help if you clarify whether you want to ship to somewhere in the country, somewhere in a relatively close country, or any country, etc. The country you choose might not be so relevant to prevent problems in shipping but shipping cost could be very different. Also it could possibly for customs reasons what country the clarient is coming back from.

There is a person on the BBoard with the screen name 'Firebird' that is in Singapore. Maybe that person knows a convient place in the area.

There are two listed as NAPBIRT members in Singapore, not that that means much.

and

The first says he is a "Certified Buffet Crampin Tech". I am suspicious, because quite apart from the spelling, what on earth dos that mean?

Buffet have repairers who learned at their factory and they get a certificate that they are authorized Buffet repairers. There is one in our country and he told me a bit about it. I don't know if the repairer from Singapore has done the same thing or is certified in a different way.

"Certified Buffet Crampin Tech".

Oh, the hours of fun we could have trying to figure that out!

Or, if you prefer:

"Certified Buffet Crimpin' Tech"
"Certified Buffet Crumpin' Tech"
"Certified Buffet Crunchin' Tech"

(Sorry...I just couldn't resist.)

my last post was kinda vague as i was in a hurry, but ill try and get some more info this time around..

i have been looking for a new Buffet R13 which as you know run rather pricy if you get a new one so i decided to get a used one and overhaul it for less than half the price. After a few weeks of searching i finally came across a site that seemed great to what i had been finding previously.

What was really great was that it included everything from explanations of the 'procedures' you can get done and their prices. It also shows a bunch of pictures of insruments they had previously overhauled that turned out amazing in my opinion although i was a little dissapointed that they didnt show any clarinet transformations besides the one on the "clarinet overhaul' page. Also shows payment options and packing information..

What the heck.. I took a few minutes to email them and just as the page said, they responded the very next day every time so that was a plus. From what i can hear they knew a fair deal about clarinet and what i should be interested in looking at depending on the current condition of mine.

Although the long shipping is always a put off.. and a rather pain in the ass (i know, i live in alaska and although its much closer than where you are, its a pain just to ship ANYTHING up here. No one likes to do it lol) I think it isnt that bad of an option and their prices seemed very reasonable to me. They also had comments from other people who had sent in their instruments. So if your not sure, give them a call or emal them and they can answer any questions. Also if you send it there and have them look at it and it turns out to be a little pricy-er than you wished to invest they will send it back without doing anything to it (besdies shipping fee's) so you dont get stuck in that "i didnt expect it to be that much" after they do it and have to may money you dont really have... hope this helps and you should definately check out the site. i plan to send mine to them this summer.

autumnsilence,

Gordon's advice is right on the money. Ignore it at your own risk. Advising others to ignore it is NOT doing them a favor.

There are certainly some legitimate operations advertising on the internet. The trick is finding one because no matter how good the website looks, any information you receive from it or the company that set it up is not independent of the source. They want your money. They can tell you anything. And some will. There is also no necessary correlation between the quality of the website and the quality of the work done. And when the repair shop is that far away, you're stuck with what you get back -- if you get anything back.

Remember that most really good repair techs have enough local word of mouth business that they do not need to advertise on the internet.

There was an episode reported on this Board a few years ago about a repair facility with an impressive website with detailed information about the work done and quick responses to questions. The owner even had a good reputation in the business.

But read this for a true horror story and then ask yourself if you want to go through the same thing:

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=183647&t=183461

BTW, I just checked and guess what? The website is still up. Still looking great.

I would recommend that, if you are going to send your instrument hundreds or thousands of miles away for repair, make %#$@ sure the folks you shipped it to are going to send it back. And make %#$@ sure they are going to do the job right. It's a lot easier to do that than to try to recover the instrument long-distance later.

Best regards,
jnk
