 Thicker mouthpiece patch
Author: alanporter
Date:   2008-07-27 23:26

I wanted to try a thicker patch and, there being no commercial ones readily available to me, I made one from a self-adhesive rubber patch from a bicycle tire repair kit. It works very well, but , does anyone know whether there is anything toxic in this type of rubber ?
I am actually a physician and I would look rather foolish if I poisoned myself !

Hi Dr. Alan,

I can see the headlines in the Times Colonist "Victoria Doc Seccumbs To Poison Patch." I really can't give you any toxic material advice but my street-sense would indicate that any solvent used to remove any stray adhesive might present more of a threat.

Perhaps Dr. Omar, our resident chemist, may be able to offer a more scientific explanation.

PS I have tried the bike patch as a MP patch but in the US, they are made of a plastic-like substance rather than rubber. Pretty disappointing.

Dr. Alan

I don't know anything about the toxicity of bicycle tire repair kit rubber. I use the 3m mouthpiece patch. I also like a thicker patch. 3m makes a black patch and a clear patch. The black patch is thicker then the clear patch so what I do is, put the black patch first then put the clear patch on top of the black. I notice that the patches seem to last a lot longer this way. I hope this helps.

disclaimer- bicycle mechanic summer job, avid cyclist.

Are you talking about inner tube patches or a tire repair kit for the actual tire, tire like outside touching the ground tire. Tire repair is non-existant these days...we just swap the bad tire for a new one as not to cause death or serious bodily injury.

i asume you are talking about an inner tube patch that is self-adhesive. You should have nothing to worry about if it is a "peel and stick" patch. The old, but still the best (for your bike that is :) ), vulcanizing glue and patch are not good for consumption, so to speak. Vulcanizers bond the two pieces of rubber together by virtually welding them into one piece.

Might I suggest...

That you take a thin, road inner tube and some double stick tape. Stick the tape on the back of a strip of rubber tube, cut out. You can then use an exacto, or razor, to cut the desired shape, and will have nothing to worry about in terms of poisoning. For that would be ironic...

Alan, without knowing the composition of the patch or the type of adhesive used it is difficult to say if it is toxic or not. The old, old, inner tube patches were made of real rubber with some pretty strong adhesives. I would more be afraid that it could not easily be removed and would bond too tightly to the rubber of the mouthpiece. The newer MP patches are made from neoprene rubber with a special low tack adhesive that makes them come off fairly easily and not leave an adhesive residue on the MP. Sticking a couple of the popular thicker BG patches together would give you almost 2mm thickness, 3 = 3mm which should be sufficient (they are 0.93 mm thick). Of course there are some people that have a latex allergy to contend with.

Alan, I discontinued using the bike innertubes since I discovered the Charles Bay patches. He makes a "thick" pad - 0.87 mm - that works very well for me. An added advantage with his patch is that it has an excellent adhesive that comes off when you to remove it and not before - and the adhesive is easily removed from the mouthpiece. The only source that I have found for this thickness particular patch/thickness is Weiner Music.

I hope this helps.
