Hi, can you please give me some advice. i am an adult learner with a Buffet R13 clarinet and presently use vandoren B40 lyre mouthpiece and BG Super revelation ligature over La Voz medium hard reeds. I have the oportunity to replace and something tells me i need to upgrade (I am now grade 5) I want to get a slightly darker tone and am getting so confused. i am probably thinking from what I have read of a Vandoren M 13 lyre or M15 (any opinions?) and a rovner dark but this is just from the stuff i have read. Can anyone suggest or recommend a good pairing? Getting very confused and lost!!!! Thanks for your help.

This is very individual. One person will get a darker tone with one mouthpiece and another will get a brighter tone with the same one. You really need to go some place that stocks a lot of different mouthpieces and try them out with several different reeds because a soft reed will play on one mouthpiece and not another, same for a harder reed. It’s been my experience though that as far a Vandoren mouthpieces go the M30 and B45 are generally darker than the M13 or 15 but again, it depends on the player. The Rovner is a good ligature, either the dark or the Eddie Daniels. La Voz are not considered professional reeds for classical players. I’d advise trying several other brands, the Vandorens, and the Rico Grand Concerts. Each make several different cuts and of course there are other brands as well.
