How to get a bright vibrant tone
Author: LEE
Date:   2000-09-16 23:23

I have been playing the clarinet for 4years now and people
have told me that I have a nice dark tone .But the other day
I heard my friend playing his clarinet and his tone sounded
more open, and bright and I just wanted to know does any body out there know any tips on getting that kind of tone.
I have also heard that using a softer reed and and using an
open mouthpiece works, is that true?

Hi Lee -- it's awfully easy to be fooled comparing your tone, from behind your horn as you blow it, to another's, as you listen to it from "outside", so to speak. I'd suggest you get a knowing third party to listen to both, alternately, or try taping both, back to back. You may be surprised! Anyway, if your tone has been complimented as "nice dark", you should probably leave it alone. I know many players who would "die" for such a lovely description of their sound! Best regards. Lee, I agree with Bob. You really don't know what you sound like to other people without listening to a recording of yourself. Don't fix it if it ain't broke, and don't assume it's broke 'till you know for sure.

1.Reed: Vandoren recommends traditional for Rossini and V12 for Brahms in their URL. http://www.vandoren.com.
V12 is a copy of Morre and has thicker heel 3.2mm,whereas traditional's is 2.8mm. My choice for brighter tones is Zonda classico-Zonda's newly designed reed. Like Vandoren, ZOnda's owner once posted here in BBS their purpose of Zonda classico. There are two Rico Grand Concert, ordinary box and thick blank. The former sounds brighter.

2.Modern clarinets have embedded tones. No body can imagine anyone can emit bright tone with Wuritzer. Therefore, often whether one can play brighter depend on instruments themselves.

The extreme bright tone is obtained by straight bore history clarinets such as often played and recorded by Charles Neidich.
