I have always been interested in music and I would like to learn to play an instrument, although I know it's unusual to begin at the age of 16. I love the sound of the clarinet, can read music, but I don't know how to play the clarinet. I have been searching for people who can teach me, not to far from my home and not to expensive, and someone who could loan me a clarinet. As you see, it's hard to find someone like that. IS THERE ANYONE WHO KNOWS IN WHAT WAY I CAN LEARN TO PLAY THE CLARINET WITH THESE CONDITIONS? (music school? conservatorium students who teach? village fanfares?) And if I ever will learn to play, can I play togheter with other people in a little ensemble? Because playing only for yourself can get ... well, boring.

Are you in a pubic school system? If you are there may be a beginner's music program. In my old school system, you could start an instrument at any age and have free lessons for two years. Often the teachers do not play clarinet as their main instrument, but they know enough to teach you the basics.
As for getting someone to loan you a clarinet, that may be a bit more difficult. Schools often have larger, more expensive instruments to use, but not clarinets. Check with local music shops to see if they have any rental programs.
Many communities have bands or orchestras which welcome players at all skill levels.

You don't tell us where you live and what is offered through schools and civic programs in your country. I am assuming that you do not live in the United States. Perhaps I am incorrect. Steve's advise is good if you live in the US. Public schools do provide a means to learn to play a musical instrument. Most retail music outlets also have studios which you can take lessons. Some of them even offer "package deals" where by you get a certain number of "free" (if you truly believe the word "free") lessons with a purchase or rental of an instrument. I seriously doubt that anyone is going to give you a clarinet unless it is a relative or neighbor that has one that isn't being used. Good luck in your pursuit.

If you have a local community college, talk to the music department out there. We not only have a community band at the two local com. colleges, but clarinet instructors that have students at all levels and ages. Go for it!

I'm takimg a class at the local college. It is working out well. Call and have them send you a catalog. One gal in the class is working on the sax and I asked how long she had been playing and she said "today is the first time I have every touched a sax." so when they say beginners they mean beginners.

My son is new to clarinets also. I appreciate this info. It came to my mind that - in Pinellas County, Fla., anyway - there are dual-enrollment programs for highschoolers. They are able to attend the local Junior college and receive credits for highschool as well as college. I think there may be an age requirement of 15 years. We haven't investigated this personally, but have heard from many sources that it is so. Of course, the course needs to be paid for as in all college credits. But one can kill two birds with one stone. Pay for lessons and a college credit course at the same time.
