 Help! I need to find a Buffet R13 S2 A Clarinet Bell
Author: emalexandra
Date:   2008-07-23 13:27

I stupidly lent my R13 A Clarinet to a very promising student who had a important concert... and it came back with a plastic bell!!!!.

Please please does any one know where or how I could find another Series 2 R13 A Clarinet bell ?
Sadly it seems to be lost, I know a new one is about £200. However could it be possible to find the right one to match?
Can anyone help me?

bummer, sorry to hear that.

i love many of my better students dearly, but doing this would probably result in my heating tar and gathering feathers.

spare (used) 'A' clarinet bells are not too common unfortunately.
maybe send the recalcitrant student a bill for a new replacement?

Hi
Thanks for your reply...I know its going to be hard to find another a bell from the same period as my A Clarinet.
I will try to get my student to pay for a new one, however I would much prefer to have a series 2 A bell to match and not a brand new one..

Hopefully someone has some spares!?
Em

If it were me, I would buy a new bell no matter what the expense and have the bill sent to the students parents. You could always set up a loud stereo system outside their home residence playing Anker Bilk's recording of "Stranger On the Shore" until they pay up.........

I wouldn't bill the student unless they obviously stole the bell or something. You let him borrow it without any kind of written contract, so no offence, but it's kinda your fault. Did he/she tell you how you ended up with a plastic bell? Seems kinda odd. That would help us out here.

Anyways, here are some US websites that carry Buffet R13 bells.

This is probably your best option...

I would ask the student to take responsebility for what he did and pay you back so he will learn to take good care of his instrument and those he might borrow.

Re post 4 above - I think you will find that the Buffet A and Bb bells are different, the A is usually about 2 mm longer and perhaps also internally also.

No good deed should go unpunished, eh, Ryder. Remind me never to lend you anything -- not that I would.

emalexandra,

According to the Buffet website, Buffet's representatives in the United Kingdom are:

Lyndon Chapman
Mobile phone +44 (0)7899 918074
lyndon.chapman@buffetcrampon.fr

Tim Barrett
Mobile phone +44 (0)7786 073683
tim.barrett@buffetcrampon.fr

If you contact one of them, they might be able to help you, particularly if the design has changed. It might be possible to order a specific replacement from the factory. A dealer or good repair tech might be able to order one as well.

Best regards,
jnk

What I keep wondering is how can you lose a bell and endup a plastic one? When I put my instruments away I clean the instrument and start putting everthing away at the same time. I don't put one piece away then go do something else then comeback and put the rest away.

What was the student doing that he lost the bell and did he try to cover up the mistake with a platic bell thinking you were not going to find out.

What was his side of the story?

I agree with Ryder that is kinda your fault but still when you let someone borrow your horn or anything, it is implied that they are going to bring the item back in the same condition that it went out.

I think you are as much to blame as the student and he/she should pay 50% of the cost of the replacement bell. Since you are going to need a bell why not go for an Backum or something else.

Anyways, sorry that happen to you.

someone somewhere will have a plastic clarinet with a wooden bell (with a Buffet logo on it and possible the marking "A").... i'd find THAT PERSON if i were you. If they are a young student then eventually they will brag about the bell and the other students will hear about it. It is also possible that the bell doesn't fit on the clarinet properly, so they may decide to look for the person with the plastic bell....
It may, of course, have been deliberate theft, but even then the student will have to actually play the clarinet somewhere, so it could still be possible to track it down.
What was the "event" that the clarinet was borrowed for?

Jack,

I don't know HOW the bell was lost and if i did mabey my opinion woud change. Let me clear something up. If I were the student and I lost my teacher's bell, I would feel obligated to pay for it's replacement, but if I were the teacher, I would notify the parents of the child, but not insist that they pay. If they are reasonable people and understood at least minimally the cost of being a clarinetist (which by paying for lessons, they probably are), then they would probably offer. Also if I were the parents i would offer to pay.

To avoid such things, I almost never lend my clarinet stuff and especially my clarinet. If someone else does use my stuff I am right there with them. If I do need to lend something in an emergency and something was lost i would not insist that payment be made, for I am not revengeful person, most of the time. :)

At the same time, I try not to ask to borrow in case something bad were to happen.

I wasn't trying to make emalexandra feel stupid at all. She was doing a good deed. I was just saying that when you lend something, there is risk involved. I even tried to offer help, but missed the fact that her R13 was of a different era in the, well, "R13 world."

anyways, good luck emalexandra in your search and i am sorry for your loss.

Sorry, Ryder, but to imply that this is the fault of the owner of the A clarinet is not just wrong, it's bordering on nonsense. The student and/or parents are responsible for any loss or damage to the instrument. End of discussion. It is not the fault of the teacher in any way, shape or form. No "mabey" [sic] about it.

If I let a friend borrow my red car (which,by the way, leaves my house in perfect condition), and it comes back with an aftermarket black door on it, that is not my fault. It's the fault of the person who had possession of the car when the door got damaged.

Replacing the missing part with one that clearly does not match is ridiculous, and to expect the original owner to assume financial or moral responsibility is an interesting, yet ridiculous, fantasy.
