The Clarinet BBoard

Three of the last twelve topics posted have been about oboes. Since when has this been anything other than a clarinet discussion group?
I would love to have somewhere to discuss my other favourite instrument, the recorder, but I don't think this is the place. What do you feel? What does Mark feel? and what do the sponsors of the Clarinet Bulleting Board feel?

Eoin,
Don't go there. I let off-topic things go on for a while, especially when they're music related. I make the decisions. If I feel things have gotten too far off-base, I'll let people know. I don't need you to ask me how I feel, and my sponsors are my business, not yours. If you don't want to read the 10 out of 27700 postings about obes, skip them. But don't whine about it here.

I myself don't mind the occaisional oboe posting. I usually just skip over them. I do like the idea of an oboe or recorder bulletin board, but Mark - Is such a thing feasable? I suppose we have to draw the line somewhere. Perhaps two BBs, one clarinet, another general music related. I myself am quite content at present with a clarinet bulletin board, but I would probably visit the others. What do you think? -- Nate Zeien

If Mark could summon up the strength and enthusiasm, then i agree with Nate that a dedicated oboe board might meet with a demand. How about a reed instrument board, so we get whatever cross fertilization of ideas there may be between these closely related instruments? Some months ago we talked about whether clarinets blow out, and I think we had some oboe input then, which was useful. It would also give us two boards to refer to .............. perhaps, on further reflection that might be too much of a good thing!

Sorry Mark, I'd didn't mean to sound like I was whining. I don't mind the oboe stuff, but I would like to talk about recorders, and I restrain myself. From now on, I'll slip in the occasional recorder question and see who answers.

That's fine. Re: other BBoards: I couldn't monitor them personally like I do this BBoard, and I don't really know if I want to open myself up to other problems that could occur should I decide to let someone else run the Bboards.
I'll ponder the question for a while ...

Eoin: I don't know if this meets the need, but eGroups has a recorder board that looks fairly active. Also, oboe and clarinet that don't seem to be too active.

You asked for 'opinions', Eoin, so I'd like to express some.
I don't get along well with (the few) people I've met who think their instrument or 'their kind of music' is the *best* one, (the only one - to the exclusion of all others). Believe it or not, I've met a person or two with this attitude. They weren't nice. I don't think you are like that at all and I've enjoyed your posts in the past. You are a sensitive, sharing person.
To me 'we're all workin' for the same guy' in this sense:
We expect people here to understand, empathize and help solve our difficulties (as you have, Eoin) and 'we' do a pretty good job of it. Are we alone in this? I mean, shouldn't we attempt to at least appreciate that other instrumentalists have things they're working on to resolve too? If we can get along, with patience, and help someone else we might find an answer to something that's been troubling us. It happens y'know.
Personally, I like discussing other instruments. The more we know the better we'll understand how we relate to one another('them'). This is primarily a clarinet discussion board, that's true. But, I fail to understand how excluding other instruments, **including our close cousin, the recorder**, will help us blend with them and... I think the goal is to make good music.
My personal experience has been that I've learned as much from brass wind players as from wood wind players. Then there was that fiddler and, oh yeh, the lady guitarist and....

I like an occasional blip about other instruments since so many of us either double or dabble in other woodwinds. I think Mark has used good judgment in allowing sidebar issues to come up occasionally as long as they are conceivably related to the interests of clarinet players.
But please . . . NO BRASS!!! As a comment was made last night at rehearsal when one of our kind was acting kind of grouchy - "My!! Did we wake up on the wrong side of the orchestra this morning?"
(Last paragraph to be taken tongue-in-cheek, lest someone misunderstand.)

Sorry if I ruffled some feathers here but I feel the pool of knowledge and experience here (doublers, techs, instructors, etc.) is second to none.

A fine discussion! Many of us play a number of insts, woodwinds in particular, I fought the oboe for 10 years and retreated to clars to preserve sanity, so am happy to help answer simple double-reed questions, many of which have applicability to our Albert-Mullers and Boehms!! So, my suggestion, Mark, continue to post oboe, eng horn and bassoon threads if within reason, but I believe there is [are] double-reed sites for the detailed questions. Don

Mark, here's an idea to toss around in your head. Who says you have to make an oboe or recorder bulletin board? Some links to other BBs would be a start. The occasional nonclarinet question is fine, but I think that the whole "clarinet" atmosphere would be destroyed if you made it into a woodwind BB. I also have to agree, no brass please. -- Nate Zeien
