 Time to Upgrade?

Hi there, new to this board...what a cool place.
Anyway....my daughter is going to be in her 2nd year of H.S. Marching this fall. Her clarinet is a Yamaha, that we purchased after renting for a year back when she was in the 4th grade. It's plastic and has held up very well.
As far as her talent goes, I don't think she'll ever play at Carnegie hall, but she may stick with it into college. I have a few questions....is it time to upgrade her to a better clarinet, can we just upgrade her mouthpiece? wood vs. plastic? We live in Sunny So.Cal. so weather/humidity is not an issue (should we go with wood)....Thanks in advance !!!
Nancy

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If she's happy with it why bother?

For marching purposes, the Yamaha is perfect. Keep it and upgrade the mouthpiece if she is having trouble with her current mouthpiece. Consult her teacher for advice and this board for recommended makes/models.

For school band, she probably would like a wooden instrument, but it's possible that the Yamaha (assuming it is in good shape and maintained) could service her through high school.

I played a plastic Evette all the way through high school and part time in college. Took some lessons in college until I ran out of time for it. Served me ok.

The plastic will suit her fine for marching band, as you do not want to put a decent wood clarinet outside, it will crack. If she really wants to stick with it, even through college, it may be worth it for concert band to get her an intermediate level wood instrument.

It's might be worthwhile to have her try a couple of more advanced clarinets to see if she thinks she would benefit from a better instrument. The same goes for a mouthpiece. Just be careful that you don't let her try an instrument you absolutely cannot afford :)
