 D4, B4, F5, etc...
Author: clarionman

As I read more of the topics here on the forum I have notice that some people use terms like B4 to C6, D4, etc...

My question is what does the number after the note name mean and where do these number come from?

Thanks.

If you look (scroll) above at where the Bulletin Board logo is...to the right is a treble cleff, staff, and a C with the designation "C4".

This is what is often referred to as "middle" C. But that name comes from the piano and has no relation to the clarinet.

The number corresponds to the octave and allows us to speak clearly about what note we wish to discuss. From the C4 every note that ascends in that octave has the suffix 4 until you reach the next C (which becomes C5).

The first B below C4 would be B3.

It is a rule which clarifies discussion.

Thanks Clarionman for asking the question. I was having a hard time following discussions on notes with numbers, then my eyes would glaze over!

Thanks James for 'splaining so well. Now I understand.
Phew, so much to learn, so little time.

Now I'm confused. In the recent post, "Where/how do you place your tongue when you playing long note?", Band Geekette identified C1 as being thumb and 3 fingers C. What's the deal?

She didn't follow the rules. Mark and GBK are on their way to her house even as we "speak." Tonight she will sleep with the fishes.

Best regards,

But she will gurgle in C4.

...and a pink plastic clarinet attached to her feet. (the moderators stock these just for that purpose)

I could understand if she said "C0" as "being the lowermost C", but C1? OMG!

(Hint to the forum operators: could you offer some notes-with-staff icons that could be used like smileys? Would make 'splaining a whole lot easier...)

CarlT I was as confused when the post "Where/how do you place your tongue when you playing long note?", identified C1 as being thumb and 3 fingers C.

That is what made me ask this question. I had some idea about the meaning of the number after the letter but the other post confused me more.

I would like to thank Tobin for explaining everything so well.

Now I finally know the answer. But what if the C were in the bass or alto cleff? Also, is that concert pitch or pitch for the Bb or A clarinet? (just kidding). ESP
