 What is Sib Am*que??

Hello, I entered a serial number of I clarinet I'm thinking of buying, and the person said they were told it was a R13 but when the results came up on the Buffet website, it said " N? 1 Sib Am*que" Was this a past code for the R13? I know 1131 and 1132 are the codes now for R13's.

I'm not postive, but I think the Sib incidates 'Bb', N indicates Nickel plating, and 'Am' indicates American pitch (440).

computer programming 101 - how cryptic can you make the output...

Claribari,

The designation you found is that of an early R13 made for the "American" market. We went over this in a similar thread about 10 days ago. Please see:

Paul,

As I mentioned in that thread, in response to your post there, for R13s from that era, the N does not stand for nickel plating. It is part of the model identification (NO1). The keys may or may not be nickel plated (but probably are because silver plated keys appear to have been rare during the period when this clarinet was made).

Best regards,
jnk

The Buffet web site is not always accurate. I have a Buffet clarinet, s/n 43516, which I bought in 1954 which according to the bill of sale is an R13 with serial number 43516. Buffet's site returns:

Brand : Buffet Crampon
Instrument : Clarinettes E12 Master Model
Serial number : 43516
Year of manufacturing : 07/07/1980

Brand : Buffet Crampon
Instrument : Clarinettes Argentes
Serial number : 43516
Year of manufacturing : 23/02/1978

Obviously it was manufactured before either of these dates.

Lee,
I have found that on the Buffet website, usually if the serial number is less than six digits you usually won't find anything unless it was made in the seventies or later.

Well, claribari, that's not quite accurate. If you look at my post on the earlier thread that I linked above, you will see that I was able to find serial numbers for professional Buffets as low as 58835, an R13 made in 1958.

Also, Lee, it's not so much that the list is inaccurate. Actually, I think it is quite accurate as far as it goes. The problem is that it is incomplete. The reason it doesn't list your clarinet is that it doesn't include professional instruments as old as yours (which was made before November, 1958, where the professional models start as far as I have been able to determine). The two clarinets that it does list with your number almost certainly existed. The "E12 Master Model" would be an Evette & Schaeffer Master Model which has a K prefix. (The list does not include prefixes and, I know, the E&S Master Model is generally referred to as an E13. But that's what its U.S. distributor called it, not how Buffet apparently designated it in its factory at the time.) I don't know what the other model was. I've never heard of that one.

Best regards,
jnk
