Greetings
Just a heads up…
While perusing that not-to-be named auction site, I came across several interesting clarinets being sold from China. These clarinets have names such as Buffet and Yamaha.
These clarinets are plainly listed as: “CLARINET- Bb- Black Wood finish- with hard case”. They all have low opening bids with big shipping…
Again just a heads up…

Sometimes the clarinets are labeled BUFEET.
I was recently sent a photo of their "Bufeet" logo, just to be able to show students and parents who might get tricked. (see attachment)
BTW - They also offer HENR SELMER saxophones.

I went and looked, and the first one I saw was clearly stamped Buffet (not Bufeet).
The Yamaha-like logo on the other style clarinet is too indistinct to make out details, but they do have a "Yamaha" flute. "Made in Japan".
So unfortunately, parents and students cannot so easily avoid being tricked.

A good rule to go buy when shopping for anything (especially on auction sites and classifieds...):
"If the deal seems too good to be true... it probably is."
You get what you pay for! I hope parents and students understand that.

I just did a search for "CLARINET- Bb- Black Wood finish- with hard case" look and I see "Buffet" not "Bufeet". Something wrong with my screen?
Also, Chinese clarinets always have some charictaristic physical features of key construction- honestly, I don't see that here.
Am I wrong in thinking that these could just be bottom line plastic Buffets and Yamahas? Didn't Buffet say that they would expand production in China a few months ago? Maybe this is it?
I have seen some scam labels on ebay, but I am not sure about this one.
... at least from the photos; who knows what will come in the mail.

It looks like they make most of their money on the shipping cost ($130.00?!). Like you, skygardener, I do not see anything wrong with the clarinets I saw on "that auction site" but they could be going to counterfeit clarinets after their brands (Cecilio, Venus, etc) have failed.

The problem is that since this summer, customs will inevitably confiscate such merchandise. Not even selling but also importing (even for personal use) of counterfeit goods is forbidden here. Returning tourists will have to be prepared for longer queues at customs...
And eBay is in trouble over brand infringements anyway...

Another one to look out for on evilBay is SLEMER. I've seen "SLEMER" saxophones at flea markets. They're SSOs: sax-shaped objects, but they're not all alike and may be coming from different sources.
On one alto that at a quick glance appeared to be lacquered brass, I saw evidence that an original logo and serial number had been crudely ground off and replaced with the "SLEMER" logo and a serial number, then lacquered over. There was an unmistakable area of indentation around and under both the serial number and the brand name--and that sax wasn't made of brass. The grinding had worn through the thin plating in places, revealing a whitish pot-metal beneath. Since the sax felt heavier than most extra-cheap instruments, I suspect this was yet another knock-off with lead in it--another reason to keep this junk away from kids.
The dealer said he bought this sax on evilBay. I got the impression this dealer told me the truth when he said he had no idea the sax wasn't a Selmer. I think he was genuinely appalled when I pointed out a few things to him. He closed the case and put the sax in his truck. I haven't seen him since and I don't know what, if anything, he did to follow through.

Hello,
I found a few other listing of these possible counterfeit clarinets:
listed as "Brande new Nickel Plated 17 keys Bb Clarinet". These listings clearly show Buffet and Yamaha and again with huge shipping costs.
Skygardner, one of the reasons I suspect these maybe counterfiet clarinets, is the lack of model numbers...Both Buffet and Yamaha have model numbers on their "student" model horns just below their logos on the upper joint.
