 Scale fingering question
Author: DrH2O
Date:   2008-07-07 19:36

My fingers are in a knot!

I'm currently working on some of the Klose scale and arpeggio exercises and have hit a fingering snag. On the p123 scale exercise going from G# minor into E major, I have to go from a low G# down to low E then up to F# to G#, etc. How do I navigate this? Is this a place where I have no choice but to slide or is there an alternate fingering that makes this easier?

Similar problem with the G# min arpeggio on pg 128 that takes me from G# (top of staff) down to B then up to D# to G# and to B. It seems like sliding is the only way to achieve this, but I'm hoping I'm missing something.

Thanks,

Anne

For the scale, play the low E with the lh pinky and slide it to the F#. This is the normal way to navigate this fingering problem. For the arpeggio and depending on the speed, slur or not, ect, I either switch little fingers very quickly on the B or I slide to the B from the G# with the lh pinky. Awkward, but do-able with practice.

These fingering sequences are why it is good to purchase a clarinet with the auxillary Eb/Ab lh lever. Why this isn't standard equipement on all modern clarinets is a mystery to me.

Assuming you do not have a left pinky G#/D# key, there are 4 choices available to navigate this problem:

1. Slide the left pinky from E to F#.
2. Slide the right pinky from G# to low E
3. Do a "retake" - play the low E with the left pinky and quickly retake the same note with the opposite hand (right pinky)
4. Use normal fingerings, but pause for the breath (as is suggested/indicated). This gives you time to switch pinkys on the low E.

Play the G#5 as:

TR x x o / x x o

sliding and quick pinky switches are part of the game here.

You will soon be amazed at your finger dexterity as you practice (starting slow) switching from left to right pinky fingerings. Suddenly, you will have the experience of moving your pinkies twice as fast as you thought your could --making (say for example) 2 different fingerings of Long C in the space of one note.
