Hi, I play a Yamaha 650 and I'm looking to get a Vandoren M13 Lyre mouthpiece, but I've read that they are made with the Buffet R13 in mind. Does anyone know if there is a downside to playing this mouthpiece on my clarinet? Thanks!

Try one out at a store first to determine if tenon fits the Yam barrel .

These mouthpieces are relatively inexpensive. You can get one and see how it works for you. That would be the best way to know.

Aren't Yamaha clarinets built with Buffet in mind?

It's fine to play a M13 lyre on a Yamaha. John Yeh of the Chicago Symphony plays Yamaha Sev's and has been using an M13 lyre for years. Just try it out and see if it works for you.

Any brand mouthpiece should fit any brand clarinet. There are occasions when a barrels tendons are slightly miss sized but as a general rule the mouthpieces should all fit. Then it’s just a matter of intonation. Try it out and see. All the major mail order stores will allow you to try several on a trial basis. You should try at least three because no two play exactly alike. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457 (Listen to a little Mozart, Live performance)
