Bringing new meaning to the phrase...

I have now discovered new meaning to the phrase "Lock yourself in a practice room."

I'm attending Western Michigan University in the fall for my bachelors degree, and since I live within fifteen minutes of the university, I decided to get a key to the practice rooms in their music building. Since the beginning of June, I've been spending a good portion of time at the school practising. Last night, I was there from about 7:00 and planned to stay until about 9:00. I say "planned" because, when my friend who was practising with me knocked on my door and I went to open it, the door handle got jammed and wouldn't turn, so I had no way to get out of the room. I had my cell phone with me (and a charger too, as luck would have it), but I didn't have any numbers for maintainence or the police. Consequently, we tried for about an hour, with no luck, to open the door. I slipped her my key under the door, hoping she could get it open from outside. No dice. I unscrewed the door handle using a dime, only to reveal three small holes in the door (for the handle and the two bolts), meaning I couldnt get the bolt unlatched from there. Still nothing. Because of the design of the latch, we couldn't open it using the old "library-card-in-door-frame" trick. Everything we tried did nothing. After about an hour of this, I decided to call my mom. She didn't pick up until the foruth or fifth try, but from there she looked up the number for the police, called them, and they called maintainence. I was in that room for another hour after she called, so what do I do? Well...practise of course.

I eventually got out when a guy from maintainence showed up with a bump key at about 11. After that, I had found more things I wanted to get done, so I moved to a different room and practised for another hour.

Moral of the story: locking yourself in a practise room can turn a planned two 1 hour practise sessions into four 1 hour practise sessions.

Just so you know for future emergencies... [rotate]

Last time I checked, police in the Kalamazoo area still responded to calls dialed to the number 911. When all else fails, you could try that number. It gets you to the Michigan State Police over the cellular net, and they can relay the call from their dispatch office to ANY police agency anywhere in the state of Michigan, including WMU public safety, who can then contact maintenance.

I get the most done when I'm held somewhere involuntarily for long periods of time. Programming Languages lecture? That's where I wrote my saxophone trio.
