What are good sources for pads, especially sets of pads. I've got a USA made Vito bass I might need to redo at present, and one never knows when and where the urge to put all new pads on something may strike.

One source that I've dealt with for flute pads is Ferree's Tools. They carry pads for other woodwinds.

Bill's suggestion is a good one, if you have experience with repairing instruments. Before giving too much advice, it would be helpful to know how much experience you have.

Dear Yoder: Plenty left to learn. On the other hand, when I've bought new horns, or had horns overhauled, I've always had to solve problems left by the professionals. I've taken to doing my own overhauls, figuring that if I was going to have to fix it anyway, I might as well fix the whole thing. I am curious though: The upper section toneholes will have deposits adhering, presumably breathed in with the air stream. I've been scraping them out with a screwdriver when I do an overhaul, but I don't really like running steel against wood. Is there a better way to remove the grunge, or better still, keep it from being there at all? I find that the gradual accumulation of material is the principal cause of poor response from the instrument. It takes a long time to accumulate, but it eventually has quite a marked effect.
