Can anyone recommend a good clarinet repair book where I might be able to teach myself some basic repair? Also looking for a good repairman in Chicago. I am aware of Brannens but was wondering if there were others.

There is one called "The Clarinet Revealed" It covers a lot repair work and some theory. I have the book but I don't work on my own clarinets.

Tom Fritz used to work at the old International Musical Suppliers store in Des Plaines and he always did good work for me.

The book is one before last in that list. I don't know a better book for repairs (although no book will have everything). It has sections on other instruments too.

I started with the Eric Brand book sold from Ferree's. Some ideas are outdated but there are a lot of good things in it.

Probably the most highly praised book for woodwind repair at present is a quite recent one:
THE COMPLETE WOODWIND REPAIR MANUAL - by Reg Thorp.

Another respected one is Saska's "A Guide to Woodwind Repair".
The Eric Brand book really is pretty dated now.
There is actually a vast searchable resource online at
http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/ towards the end... "Sax Repair, Maintenance and Modification." It covers a lot more than sax repair. Several very capable technicians have written a lot. In some areas you will find more detail there than in a text book.

There is a great book on basic band repair which I of course can't remember the title or author... it's a spiral bound thing with great pictures and tips about typical problems with each instrument. The author presented at the Midwest Clinic last December- someone else remember who that was? I got the book, but it's up at my school.

Gary Van Cott lists a repair book titled, "Clarinet, Saxophone, & Flute Repair Manual - Step by Step Easy Directions for Overhauling Your Instrument" by Lawrence Frank.
Has anyone ever used it? Is it a perhaps a good overall introduction to the subject?

To agree with others, I recommend the book by Reg Thorpe (around $80). If you are concerned about price, you may want to get the Eric Brand (around $30) manual for now. I do agree that some of the techniques are dated, but even with that said it is a very useful introduction.

If you get the Eric Brand book, it might be a good idea to go over it quickly with a technician, to mark the sections which are sufficiently dated to be rather misleading. (eg flush-banding, and soft materials to use on keys and linkages.)
