Anybody else get a free box from Pilgerstorfer Reeds?
Author: DavidBlumberg

I got in the mail today an unsolocited box of reeds from Pilgerstorfer Reeds located in Austria.

There are 3 types of reeds that their note says that they make now for French system players - Rondo, Dolce, and Orchestra .

Will report later after I try them probably tomorrow.

Free is good!

All 3 - mixed strengths. So 10 reeds varying from #2 to 3 1/2 and all 3 styles.

They look pretty good - really thick blanks and a nice curve to the tip.

Go to their site and write em.

They seem to be in a very giving mood.

At glance they look a little bit short like Lurie but cut a lot better.

They sent me a box, and I've played them a bit. Each of the three types is a bit different, all good.
The orchestra has a brighter, more brilliant characteristic, and runs a bit soft. However, it gave me some beautiful extremes of my dynamic range.
The dolce was much darker, and more peaceful. It gave very full tones throughout the dynamic range, but was a but muffled in articulation (however, that could just be me.)
The rondo seemed to be a compromise of the both. It has a darker tone than the Orchestra, but not as dark as the dolce. However, it has a very crisp articulation, and seems to be very clear and vibrant in the extreme ranges of the horn, articulating especially clearly.

Overall, they're great reeds, all playing out of the box. I would recommend purchasing them, at least trying one box.

What's the difference in the cut of the different reeds?

Since I've a relative living in Berlin, I got 8 of these in about 5 days time. After a single playing of all eight, I've put them away for additional testings. On first playing there was only one of which that was really immediately playable: "Exquisite", #2 (of all things) It was the only one of its kind in the box and really played nicely. The others were either "Rondo" or "Orchestra", all # 3 and all marked on the front of the reed. The cane on these 8 looked good, but had a green tinge. For free, they are great, but I would have to have a couple of weeks to test them before making any other pronouncements, which I will do on my site.

I got a box of these as well, and on first playing yesterday liked them, we'll see about subsequent playings as they break in.

I did ask the folk about US distribution, and so far they aren't hooked up with WWBW or Muncie, etc, but suggested that I/we contact our fave catalogue companies requesting the reeds, if we want to be able to order them without going direct.
