 Sore Lip Reaction?
Author: ErinBeaudreau

Just recently I have been experiencing some discomfort on the inside of both my upper and lower lips when I play. They almost feel slightly swollen and burn after a long practice session. I have been playing for over 12 years and have never had this happen before. I've had the inside lower lip be sore from too much pressure from the lower teeth caused by biting, but this is a very different sensation; much more like a rash of some sort. I wonder if it is even possible to have a reaction to a reed or if something else is going on. They feel especially sensitive, but begin to feel better during the 24 hours or so between practice sessions. I am not sure. I can still play just fine, however it is bothersome. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Erin, how's it going? I suggest you apply something like Anbesol, Blistex or Camphnor Phenol after you finish practicing each time. They don't taste good and may even burn slightly but medicate and "kill germs". I use one after each playing. Of course you have to apply it where it becomes sore, even inside. ESP

Thank you Edward for the suggestion. Do you or have you had much of a problem with with this? On a different note, I am not sure if you remember, but I am the clarinet player from california that you so graciously set up an additional audition for last year that was outside of peabody's standard audition times. I ended up getting into the performance program at NYU at the graduate level but declined for various reasons (financial, etc). I am now living in Syracuse, NY and have been accepted at syracuse university as a graduate student. Anyway, my apologies for all these words. I just want to thank you again for giving me a lesson at your home years back when I was a junior in college and working with me a year later during the audition process. I am very glad to have met you. Oh and by the way I just picked up the Dvorak New World Symphony and Symphonic Variations CD performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (recorded last june) and have really enjoyed it. I am assuming it is you performing. Were you playing on your Selmer Signatures? Anyway thank you again and it's good to hear from you.

Hi Erin, I do remember you and I'm happy things are working out for you. I did enjoy working with you and was sorry it didn't work out at Peabody. I haven't had that problem but I used to get a lot of cold sores so I began using what I suggested and it really helped. I figured it might work for you too. By the way, I didn't play on that recording, being the bass clarinetist I don't get to do those recordings unless there is a bass clarinet part. Take care, ESP
