 barrel for Yamaha 72 ?
Author: SteveMarsh

My Yamaha model 72 clarinet needs a different barrel. It came with a 64mm barrel, which is too short. Yamaha no longer makes parts for this clarinet which was made in the early 80's. Does anyone know which newly manufactured barrels would be suitable for a Yamaha clarinet? Most seem to be made for Buffets.
thanks.

Steve, you might want to contact some of the custom barrel makers who advertise on hte site, here. Look over on the right side of the page and click on the link for "Mouthpieces & Barrels" Many folks here are very happy with Dr. Segal's barrels. O don't know if Clark Fobes makes barrels for your instrument, but you could contact him directly and ask. There's always Morrie Backun in Vancouver, too. I think Greg Smith's barrels are msotly for Buffet clarinets, but it doesn't cost a cent to e-mail and ask. All of these gent;emen are highly regarded for their work.

What about a Yamaha YCL-CX barrel?

Given that these clarinets were meant to be copying the R13 style clarinet, something in the Moennig style barrel may work. I would consider trying a Fobes. If you get one from one of the various online retailers you could always get it on trial. You might also email Clark to ask him. He is always very helpful.

My experience (playing Yamaha Custom 82-2 and 85-2 models in the the USA through the 1990s) was that the barrels designed for R13 clarinets (notably, Chadash and Moennig styles) will work well with the Yamaha Pro clarinets. My teacher for 2 years played a 72 prototype from Yamaha, and his experience was the same (indeed, the barrels I selected worked on his clarinet).
