What register tube and key replacements are out there? I've seen the Galper on DavidBlumeburg's website and one other. What do they fix, or at least hope to fix? tuning? tone? Do you have one? If you do, in your opinion, are they worth what they cost?

It all depends on whether or not you're having a problem or not. ESP

As you mentioned, I'm the guy for the Galper register tube/key replacement.
It does clear up the throat Bb so that you don't have to use a resonance fingering to get a clear Bb. It can help with tuning in the upper register also. The Galper key/tube is only for the Buffet Bb Clarinet and there is only one type left - 300,000 serial number is the break when Buffet changed the design of the Key position and I'm not sure which keys are left (pre or post 300k design) but will know soon as I'm getting the shipment this coming week. Previously I was refering orders to Mr. Galpers son who was dealing with them, but now I will be the distributor of them.
Nothing magical here, it either works for you or not.

I had Guy Chadash move the tube higher on my old Buffet A clarinet, 92000 series, several years ago because my throat Bb was always so sharp but the throat A was not. After he moved it he made a new tube and after about a half hour of him making adjustments to it, he may have even made a second one, he got it well in tune, both the Bb as well as the voicing of the clarion register. You can’t just change a tube and expect a miracle. It might make the Bb better but not the voicing or visa versa. I know many players change the tube to help alleviate the grunt in the high A-C on an A clarinet but that can make the Bb throat tone worse. You really should be in the shop with the tech and keep trying it with a tuner to make sure a new tube fixes everything. It worked great for me. ESP, www.peabody.jhu.edu/457, (listen to my Mozart)

David,
Clear throat Bb would be a godsend, and I'd pay just for that. Throat Bb has always been a problem for me and I know I'm not the only one (lol). I've tried many a solution, such as taping, to no avail. I always have a somewhat stuffy Bb. My clarion register could use some help tuning also. I've bought a new longer, reverse taper barrel to lower the pitch. It helps some, but I still must do quite a bit of adjusting in order to play in tune at 440. Mind you, its only my clarion register though. Does that seem consistant to what the Galper tube is designed to resolve?
Knowing there is a possible solution to these problems is a relief. Let me know which design you have when you recieve the shipment please. Are these that you speak of the only Galper tube/key replacements that remain? If so, will more be made?
Thanks
Ed Palanker,
Thanks for the insight. What works for one may not work for the other is what your getting at. My struggle is finding good techs in a reasonable distance of my home. The closest I've found (thanks to an earlier post) is John Butler of Sugar Land, Texas. From what I've read he's the go-to guy here in south Texas. I'll keep searching though.
In my short years of experience I can tell that we are all locked (well, most of us at least) in a never ending battle to find that perfect tone, or tuning, etc... But that just seems to makes us better players, so I'm not complaining.

For Buffets, there is an American vent tube (eg: R13) and a European/French vent tube.
The difference has to do with the diameters of the tube (remember, it's an hourglass shape).
One has a larger entrance diameter (bore side) than the exit side (key cup).
The other tube has the dimmensions reversed.
It does affect the overall sound for all tones used with the register key.
Contact Buffet for the specifics.
