 RUA Bassooning Clarinetist? (Runyon Mouthpiece)
Author: Ski

(Rather than dredge up the most recent Runyon mouthpiece post (2006) I'm starting a new one).

--------------------------

For the time being I've given up pursuing my clarinet & bass clarinet studies (having revisited both after a 30+ year hiatus), and now I've taken up the bassoon. The first thing I did was order a Runyon bassoon mouthpiece. I settled quickly into using a Vandoren 3, and I'm having a blast. The sound is fantastic, and the familiarity of the single reed mouthpiece lets me get on with the business of learning fingerings.

Wondering if there are any other clarinetists on the board who have used the Runyon to double on bassoon, and if so, to share any insights, tips, advice, etc. for optimizing performance with this mouthpiece.

To brighten the sound (making it more edgy or reedy), try building up the tonechamber (between the tip rail and the bottom of thr window) with Blu-Tack so it resembles a baffle seen in Dukoff D model mouthpieces to see what that does.

I completely forgot about these bassoon mouthpieces - at least with these, Eb clarinet reeds are cheaper to buy and easier to maintain than bassoon reeds!

I wonder if they'll work well on contra?

Thanks for your reply Chris. I found a good closeup of the Dukoff mouthpiece on where else but www.mouthpiecemuseum.com ! I think I see what you're talking about. The chamber on the Runyon might be a bit small for that kind of operation, though. But an interesting idea all the same, thank you.

You mentioned Eb reeds. I'm using Bb's (probably to the chagrin of my soprano :) ). Would there be enough of a difference to warrant my trying Eb's?
