Advice for working w/ younger players? ++

I'm working w/ a student now (going into her 3rd year playing as a 9th grader) and she is a very timid player, plays very soft and reserved. What is a good way to get her to play out confidently and expressively? I feel like she is capable of playing challenging music w/ practice and I will be working w/ her on Jr. High all state audition music.

Any advice in general for teaching and preparing? Are there any good methods for having her learn scales? She currently knows most of the major scales one octave but she will need to know two for the auditions.

Any other tips and info would be greatly appreciated as well.

Usually a soft and reserved sound is a result of poor air support. Long tones are good, but some find them boring. Blowing up a balloon before playing can be a good way to get her to feel what good steady air support is like. Constantly reminding students at a young age to use more air support will help them in the long run.

The Jay Albert Scales book is good, it has all major and minor scales, thirds, arpeggios, and other exercises in every key...every page is the same in a different key, so can be monotonous. Also the Advanced Rubank, but that has only up to 4 flats and sharps I think...but that's usually what's required at that age anyway.

Also, being able to play a chromatic scale beginning on any note is good.

Motivate her to want to work hard by making it really fun for her.

Play duets and show her the love for music.

Hite Melodious and progressive studies are great for when she gets there.
