I remember from being at wind band this guy who sat next me once, who was proudly demonstrating that he could perform a rapid trill using the following method. He took his right hand clean off the instrument, and then placed one of the fingers of that hand on a hole where a left hand finger is usually placed. He then used this finger as one would with the left hand finger, only that there is a greater dexterity between hands then there is consecutive fingers, hence a faster trill.
Although he was a better clarinetist than I, I was very wary about his technique, and never used it, partly because my fingers are dexterous enough, and partly because it seemed to me that doing this would be more of a disadvantage to the player.
What I would like to know is, does anyone use this to perform a rapid trill? Is it a prescribed technique, or just something of the invention of the guy who sat next to me?

If your director lets you use it - go for it. I used it for about a week,my director caught on and It was either trill like that, or get writen up. ( go figure ! ) - Trilling the ' Unorthodox way ', gives a better tone and better trill in my opinion. It really in all reality depends on what the next notes are, whether you should use it or not.
There's my two cents...

Just curious, why would you get written up for trilling your own way? As long as it works, I don't see why your director should have a problem...

Actually, if I remember right.. it wasn't getting written up, I was to loose my chair. - I don't know.. He said it didn't look right, and it wasn't correct. And he would not have his first chair player trilling wrong..

I won't comment on the rightness or wrongness of trilling this way but there would be many passages where it would be difficult to cleanly and quickly reach the notes after the trill or to properly play the closing grace notes on long solo trills in classical literature.

I broke my pinky and ring finger in several places 2 years ago and while things do work adequately most of the time...I can see where this might be useful. One sometimes has to compensate in strange ways.

YOU PEOPLE SCARE ME! IThe answer to this one is simple: DO NOT DO IT! A basic rule that no teacher seems to teach is that you PLAY FROM ON TOP OF THE CLARINET - that means if you don't have to use a side key, don't use it!
This Unorthodox Trill is a disgusting way of trilling. It is too fast and it really looks stupid. If I were sitting in the audience, I would think "Oh my god, this guy (or gurl can't play for shit, that's why s/he has to trill like that!"
It's terrible , don't do it!

????????? Too fast? You mean you can't control it? Give me a break! Looks stupid? Since when has _that_ mattered? Hornists spend half a concert spinning their horns trying to get the condensation out - that's not a pretty site., either ... Or people using nose oil so they can slide ...

Guess what. There's a good chance that it's been done before, and will be done again, by people much better than you.
