Tonight we are playing Corigliano's clarinet concerto. The performance is the soloist's final diploma from the conservatory. I'm overall quite amazed by his playing that is technically perfect but also very touching emotionally especially in the 2nd movement. He's playing it all from memory "because that's easier" he says. I find this guy a special talent. How common is it in the US to play this concerto from memory?

I imagine that the top college students here wouldn't have much trouble memorizing the Corigliano. With all the practicing required to perform a piece like this, it is in many ways already memorized when you play it.

Watch up for this guy. I have never heard Corigliano performed so playful, confident and without any false prestige. The guy was just a big smile and gave it all. That he played technically perfect I don’t even have to mention.
