I'd like to invest in a nice new carrying case. I like the ProTec Metro case here...

I need some fairly small in design, not excessively bulky and with accessory pockets and a place for music. I have one of the Protec Slimline cases now and like it but I need something better for university use (i.e., something that I can store all of my music and accessories in since I'll be carrying it w/ me most of the day.)
I've also seen some by Gator Bags.
Are there any other companies that you can think of that have carrying bags similar to the one above?
Any thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated as well!

I use a leather brief case that has two large compartment sections and a section with various sized pockets. A brief case gives me a great amount of flexibility in taking one or two clarinets (or possibly flute instead of a second clarinet), reed cases, extra mouthpiece/barrel, tuner, cork slick, minor repair kit, etc. In other words, the brief case can hold all of my clarinet items as well as things I use for my other woodwind doubles.
Being a student, you may not be in a position to purchase a leather brief case but I'm sure that you can find a less expensive alternative that has similar features. Just the other day I was in Target and noticed a Swiss Army fabric brief case that looked like it would be a good case for woodwind players. It was going for a reasonably cheap price.

Try a laptop bag. My teacher uses one. it has plenty of storage and a strap that holds the case down. It's better to be organized rather than compact if you ask me.

Altieri will make custom sized bags for your current case...or rather they will take your current case size into account when they are taking your order. Altieri bags are expensive, but they protect your instrument and case really well. You can read more about them on their website.

Roger: How do you protect the instruments correctly by using the briefcase? Did you fashion something to fit inside it? Just curious, as the briefcase can definitely hold the extras well, like you mentioned. Sometimes, good briefcases can be purchased at bargain prices at yard sales, etc. because they are somewhat outmoded.

My clarinet case(s) go in the briefcase.
One thing I do -- and this is just a personal choice -- is use a replacement case for the Yamaha student plastic clarinet for all of my clarinets. It's the smallest case I've been able to find and it's incredibly sturdy & protective. I figure that if the case holds up for elementary kids throwing instrument cases around on a school bus it will protect my treasured clarinets. I purchased my Yamaha cases from Woodwinds & Brasswinds. They ran around $50 or so.
The Yamaha clarinet case fits into my briefcase with room to spare.
Given that I have reed cases, extra barrels/mouthpieces, swabs, etc stored in my briefcase, I don't need to have them in my clarinet case. Thus, a smallest possible clarinet case works beautifully for me in conjunction with a briefcase.
I forgot to mention that I also have a clarinet stand and Blayman peg in the briefcase along with everything else.
The case holds a remarkable amount of things.

Roger: Tell me where to get a double case that is small and compact and light? They don't exist. I have one of the old Yamaha double cases, which was a computer laptop case converted and was ideal, however the form for the horns was quite weak, just styrofoam. The newer one is sturdy, but huge, a hateful thing.
When I was in Boston a geat player , Phil Viscuglia great clarinet, bass and Saxophone(he played Bass in Boston after Mazzeo left and recorded the Debussy Sax piece with the BSO and Leinsdorf. He had a case he got from Mazzeo, a double case with just these prongs that came up and gripped both horns in just the right places and the horns didn't move. I loved it, but i am sure it was custom made.
Anyway, at my age, I need a light case, and oh yes, a few gigs as well.

I can't remember seeing a double clarinet case that I'd describe as small, compact, and light. Since I don't play A clarinet I can't be of much help in that respect. Sorry!
Anyway, I prefer to use individual cases for each of my doubles. Then, I have the flexability to put the particular instruments I need at a given into my briefcase.
To further complicate matters..... Since I acquired an alto flute last year I discovered its case is too big to fit into my leather briefcase. So, I had to find a larger carrying case/bag for the alto flute. Now, I use the leather briefcase for my clarinet equipment and a larger black case for my concert & alto flutes and their equipment (stands, pegs, etc).
Life is much simplier for those who just play clarinet!
