If you've played the piece for two clarinets and piano by Gary Shocker or the Cahuzac Sonates Classique, I'd appreciate your opinion of their difficulty, their potential audience appeal, and their general suitability as recital pieces.

Hello Dan,
I have heard several of Shocker's flute works (of which there are so many) and have enjoyed them all. There are generally well received. He has a strong relationship with a fine flautist here in Ch'ville, and she (Angela Kelly) recorded the first CD of his works.
I wish I could answer your questions more concretely, but that's what I know FWIW.

I played the Shocker Sonata for 2 Clarinets and Piano several years ago in a studio class. It was a relatively new addition to our school library (University of Maryland). I think it might have won a composition prize at a Clarinetfest, if I'm not mistaken. It quickly became one of the clarinet professor's favorites to recommend to his students who were looking for something other than Mendelssohn Concertpieces to play. It's pretty nice, and I think there's good audience appeal. I remember being reminded of nice but sappy film music in the slow section. I looked up his clarinet music after hearing some very nice flute music by him in a student recital. As far as difficulty, it's probably like a grade 4.5. Hope this helps. Haven't done the Cahuzac.
