I was wondering if anyone has much first hand experience with this composer's works for clarinet. I'm a fan of his orchestral works, and was looking to explore some of his clarinet pieces. They don't seem to get played or recorded very much (a quick search only turned up one recording). I know of the piece Hymnos only for its reputation for being very difficult, but there's also a clarinet sonata, quintet, and unaccompanied work in his catalog. Anyone played these? Recommend recordings?

Also don't forget his Strathclyde Concerto No. 4 for clarinet and orchestra. I looked briefly at his solo work, "The Seven Brightnesses," one time in a music store. IMO, "very difficult" doesn't begin to describe it.

A great guy to contact for Davies music is David Campbell. He plays in the Orchestra that Davies conducts.

He's the man! Really nice guy too. He played on the recital that Ricardo and Michele Zukovsky played on at Clarfest Vancouver.
David has a few clips of Davies pieces on his website media section towards the bottom.
Davies stuff is *hard*.
