I have been watching items on Ebay on antique rod rubber mouthpieces. I understand there are 3 different types of Kaspars, various Chedevilles with different names inscribed onto the mp, and many Lelanadais blanks and such.
Which of the chedevilles and lelandais are particularly notable? Some have "beaux arts" inscribed on them. Is this a great chedeville? SASome have "steel ebonite" written on them. How can I further my knowledge in knowing what's good and not that great?

Brad Behn posted information a while back that us mouthpiece makers have known for many years but hadn't summed up. In my view, it is by no means complete and includes a lot of deductive reasoning and opinion that can at times lead to some speculation, but is fairly accurate.

Also, you may want to use the search engine here as there have been many threads about this very subject.
I would also caution that value or greatness is in the ear of the beholder so that one mouthpiece with all of the right physical characteristics may not necessarily qualify as "great" in a purely artistic sense, only a monetary one.

Greg Smith's last sentence is so very true. In addition, while there are great vintage mouthpieces with all the "right" markings, there are many that may have varying dimensions in the baffle, bore, chamber, etc that make them less than optimum. Many have also been altered over the years.
I have tried a number of vintage Kaspars, Lelandais, Chedevilles or others over the years that simply were not great players. Many would command a great price if they were sold, but would not hold up to the best of the custom hand made mouthpieces by the top craftsmen of today.

Are people still hawking ebay for these things? Better mouthpieces for the modern player are being made today without the giant crapshoot this has become.
Forget the Chedevilles and Kaspars. If you didn't play one in your formative years you will not find one that is a better fit for you than what's available.
I now leave open the floor to be contradicted by delusional Ched and Kaspar owners.
