 Selective key replating cost

The Buffet R-13 clarinet (nickle plated)we just bought has quite a few spots that have plating loss ( brown/ copper color discoloration) including six rings, two spots on the shafts( acidic sweat dropped on the shafts?), two spots on the keys where finger touches. The rest of the key work is still in good shape. I was told that I had to replate the whole thing and they have to be sent off to somewhere else for replating. It costs $200 for replating and another $250 for the overhaul. This clarinet does not need a overhaul right now. But the problem is the copper discoloration seems to be turning black. I was wondering if I could have only the tarnished area replated instead of the whole thing. Does any one know if this can be possibly done? If yes, how much will it cost?

CJ, I don't know if hge can do exactly what you need, but Morrie Backun offers replating of keys along with other repairs. You can find the info at: http://www.backunmusical.com/ . He has been of help to other members of the forum here, and it can't hurt to ask if they can work with what you need done. His shop is in Vancouver, but you might be able to send in just the parts that need the replating, and then have them reattached by a local tech. I don't know about that for a fact. Best to call or e-mail the shop and see what they can do for you, if anything. It never hurts to ask.

You might also check the ads to the right side of the page, ans see if any of the regular sponsors of the board here are able to offer a similar service. Good luck.

I have seen people put a layer of top coat nail polish on the keys to protect them. This won't bring the silver back, but it will prevent it from getting worse.

Nickel plating shouold be very robust and wear-resistant - for decades.

If you have several spots of nickel plating that are failing, it suggests that the original plating was of a rather low standard. And that probably applies to the whole instrumnet, including the posts.

To re-do all the plating to a high standard certainly is quite a big job, and involves replacing all the pads and other soft materials such as key corks.

You get just the offending keys done, and you are likely to get more offending parts in short while.

Buffet is known for its superficial plating of late. You are unlikely to have this sort of problem with say a student Yamaha. So how about get Buffet to replace any offending parts.

Nice idea, but she is not the original purchaser of the clarinet, it's from an online auction, so the warranty probably does not apply at all. Additionally, I recall reading that Buffet was not even replating the keys for original owners of new instruments, even after just a few months of ownership.
