 Barrel for Evette & Schaeffer
Author: Larry Scharff

I have obtained a restored Evette & Schaeffer B-flat clarinet (No. K4022). However, its barrel is an Evette, not Evette & Schaeffer, and it is 60 mm in length, not the 65 mm or 66 mm barrel that I understand most clarinets have today. I know that this board has members who know the E&S clarinet and its history. Do any of you have a suggestion for a readily available used barrel of the appropriate length and bore to replace the barrel that I have on my clarinet now? Would a Buffet R13 barrel or even one customized as Moennig or Chadash improve the tuning and tone?

Until you get better info from someone more knowledgeable, Larry, I suggest you get a Click barrel and from using it you can get a better idea of what length the E&S requires. I use a Click when I don't have a bbl for a horn as in your instance.
I suggest this because I have the impression the E&S uses a shorter bbl than an R13....but I'm not sure.

I'd think a Buffet barrel would work fine on it, either an R13 or E11 barrel should work.

In another thread (here: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=241631&t=241616) I wrote that I have an early K series (ca. 1953?) E&S, which I bought used; the barrel I got with it is marked E&S and generally matches the instrument, and is 67 mm long. Another poster wrote that all E&S clarinets were supplied with 64.5 mm barrels. Another poster said he'd just measured the barrel of his 1970s-era E&S and it was 65.1 mm.

Oh, and I have an Evette too, and the barrel I got with it was also 67 mm long.

So BobD's advice to get a Click barrel makes sense... except... that's what I did, and I had to return it; it didn't fit on my instrument. The tenon socket was too small. Maybe I could have had the cork on the upper joint of my clarinet thinned down, but that idea didn't appeal to me.

Instead I bought a 65 mm E-11 barrel, which seemed to work (and fit) fine. Whether it's really the right length for my clarinet and mouthpiece, I don't know; I was just getting back to clarinet so had a weak embouchure at the time, and these days I play a different clarinet.

Thanks for all the comments thus far. Does anyone know for sure what length barrel came with the original E&S clarinet of this vintage? Would that number mean that anything longer that I put on the instrument now would make it too sharp?

Original barrel is 65 mm long. Some four digit K-series E&S clarinet have been made by Malerne. These have shorter 64 mm barrels.

Longer barrel makes a clarinet FLATTER

Thank you for that reply, Vytas. Do you recommend any particular kind of 65 mm. barrel for my E&S? Is there much chance of my finding an E&S barrel of the kind that came originally with my E&S?

I'm correcting my own opening message. The serial number of my E&S is K1422 (NOT K4022). My research online has turned up conflicting dating of E&S clarinets with K numbers this low. I would welcome more evidence bearing on this and how that might suggest the right barrel replacement that I am seeking.

I have a K8000ish E&S master model (from 1959). The original barrel was 65 mm. I recently replaced it with a 66 mm Buffet Moennig A barrel at the suggestion of my tech who was doing intonation work on it. I tried a 65 mm Moennig barrel and ultimately decided that it tended to be to sharp in the upper chalemeau/throat tones with the shorter barrel (which is probably why there was a tuning ring in the original 65 mm barrel when I bought the clarinet). Why not try a couple and see which one sounds/tunes best?

I found though that my E&S is VERY temperature sensitive and plays noticably flat if the room is much below 68oF (which my house often is!). My clarinet seems to take longer to adjust/come up to playing temp than others, or maybe it's just me!

Thanks, Anne, for your E&S experience and insights.

My first instrument was a E and S 1930s Bb with its original 66mm Barrel.
We got it from a pit orchestra oboist from South Philadelphia.
It underwent several minor repairs, the final one by Hans Moennig who put cork pads on the upper joint. He left the barrel alone.

The E and S seemed to function fine with a 66mm, although I later made a 67 for it, since it tended to sharpness in cold weather. Eventually I sold the horn.

From what you and others have said, it seems that E&S Bbs came with barrels of 64 to 66mm. I'm leaning toward a 65. Thanks for your contribution. Your website is interesting, too.
