I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good repertoire for a relatively small chamber orchestra that includes one or (preferably) two clarinet parts. I may be involved in a small tour in a few months, and would like to have some pieces to suggest that would require clarinets.
We were originally going to do a couple of full scale symphonic works (Tchaikovsky 5 and some others) but had to scale things down to cut costs. At the moment, some things have been suggested that are scored for 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 horns, and strings. If anyone knows of anything with similar orchestration that includes clarinets, I'd really appreciate it.

Mozart symphonies, 39 and 40, all the Beethoven symphonies ( No 4 requires only one flute), Weber Overtures and or the two Symphonies. Haydn London Symphonies the late ones require clts but the parts are not that interesting. Really anything from the Classical repertoire and early Romantic including Mendelsshon.

"Well known" is a fungible concept. Here's a few possibilities.
Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Copland: Appalachian spring (original version), Latin-American sketches
Delius: Irmelin prelude
Holst: Songs without words
Barber: Knoxville summer 1915
Vivaldi: Concerto for 2 oboes and 2 clarinets
Respighi: The birds
What's your rental budget? Most of these are probably affordable, but the Barber in particular is costly.
How are you fixed for Harp? Piano/harpsichord? Percussion?

I'd suggest to look into the Kalmus catalog (go to http://www.kalmus-music.com/default.htm - hit Search the Database, select ChamberOrch under Ensemble and click on Search), you'll get 1251 results, many of which are scored in the way you want.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Some of these look promising.

The rental budget's not terrible, but we're quite limited as to the number of players we can bring. I noticed Mozart 39 and 40 might be possibilities, but Beethoven is pushing it (mainly because of the trumpets and timpani). And there's no way we could afford a harpist, pianist, or percussionist. Unfortunately, I'm not the one making the final decision, either, so that makes things a bit more difficult.
I'm going to keep looking into some of the suggestions above, and check out the Kalmus catalog.
