Richard Stoltzman is coming to a college that is only about an hour away. Would this be a good thing to go to? I'm thinking I'm gonna get tickets. The middle school band director (a clarinetist, I'm a high school student) told me that there's nothing like it, and I'm interested in seeing him perform. Any comments?

I've enjoyed his concerts. Some pieces I liked, some I didn't, but that's to be expected. He's a good showman.

If you have a chance to see him live.......GO!!! I've only been lucky enough to hear his recordings, but he is a master. It'd be a wonderful experience, I'm sure.

I heard Richard Stolzman give a clinic-demonstration to a group of clarinet students at a high school in our local school district (an Artist in the Schools program sponsered by our local Civic Center at which he was appearing that evening) and he was, to put it mildly, not at his best. He played flat to our piano (insisting that IT was sharp and HE was right), tried to play jazz and was silly, and was almost aloof in his rapport with the students. Clearly, he was not "up to tempo" that day and left, with me and my students, a very poor impression. On the other hand, I have heard him play on TV (Copland Concerto--Classic Arts channel) when his performance was brilliant. As,perhaps, the most recorded clarinetist of modern times, he is certainly worthy being heard and I recommend that you attend (if ticket prices are reasonable), but I hope that you hear him on one of his "better" days. By all means go and take your parents. Richard Stoltzman is a terrific performer - and like many other clarinetists - he sounds much better live than on a CD. We have seen him about 4 times - every concert was a gem.

In my opinion, you should definitely go see him play. I have seen him live in concert 3 times and also got the pleasure of spending a week with him and Kalmen Opperman at the Clarinet Summit they held in June 1999. He is not only a great performer, but also a great person. If you do go, make sure that you stay after to meet him- you won't regret it.

You should definatly see him. I haven't personally heard him in concert. I think he has done a lot for the clarinet. He has a vast repitore list that he has recorded. He is a player that definatly made the clarinet a soloist instrument. Many people have thier opinions about his playing, but this is a opportunity that you should not miss.

By all means go. You will never regret that you went. One of the best times I remember was driving with friend most of the night to see Charles Neidich. I still remeber the experience. Stop reading this and go get the tickets!
