Hello,
I'm looking at Iggy Gennusa's Buffet clarinets. His B-flat is serial number 58815. From what I can find this is 1957. Do the experts agree? His A clarinet is 147440. That's 1974, according to my research. Are these both considered R-13s? These are both great playing clarinets, as one would expect, and I'm going to make them my main clarinets. I'm trying to establish provenance, so does anyone know the year that Hans Moennig died? Iggy always told me that all of his instruments were worked on by Mr. Moennig, but I can't find his death date and wonder if it is possible that he worked on this 1974 A clarinet, as I have no clue as to when he passed away.
Why do people use x's (58xxx, for example) when stating serial numbers of instruments? Perhaps I'm missing something, but does it matter if people know the serial number of my instrument?
Thanks for any input.

I just Googled "hans moennig" (with the quotes) and the first thing to come up was "A Tribute to W. Hans Moennig - 1903-1988" at http://idrs.colorado.edu/Publications/DR/DR12.1/DR12.1.Wendel.Moenig.html

Hello,
Thanks! How do the xxx's prevent insurance fraud? If someone were to commit fraud, couldn't they simply claim any number? What does revealing your particular serial number do?
Thanks for the dates!

What a treasure to have those clarinets! I also remember seeing 1988 as Hans Moenig's year of death back when I worked in the ICA Research Center. -Lori

The reason for the XXX is when you don't know the history of an instrument. When you buy a second-hand instrument, there is always the possibility that it was stolen at some time in the past, maybe several owners ago.
By announcing you have a particular serial number, you are taking the risk that someone can prove that this is his instrument, stolen from him years ago. At least under English Law - it may be different elsewhere - you would be obliged to return the instrument to him. Or, more likely, to give it to his insurers. It would be up to you to try and recover your money from the person you bought it from, who might himself be innocent of the crime.

Ben are you unhappy with your Orsi and Weir clarinets that you've been playing for I think almost 2 years(the A for only 1 year)? I think going from Selmer Recital to Buffet R-13 is pretty big change. From what I've read then I think both the Selmer Recital and Orsi and Weir Euro bore have more resistance than any Buffet clarinet.

Ben,
Your old teacher (Girko) will be pleased that you've acquired these wonderful instruments from Iggy's estate. Steve, as you know, is a real proponent of the older Buffets. I've played both of his '60's era Bb and A, and they are absolutely wonderful, "dead-on" clarinets. He has three sets from that era, and they're all equally good horns.
You could contact Mark Jacobi about the horns, too. No doubt he's worked on them sometime during their lifetime.
Best wishes,

Hello,
It's good to hear from everyone. Vytas, how are you sure? I saw a list that looked like 1957. Thanks.
Iceland, The Orsi and Weir is a great clarinet. I was not unhappy, I just got an offer from Buffet to become an artist/clinician. I never did get an A, by the way. These Buffet clarinets are awesome!
Also, we've owned these clarinets for about 4 years. We've been donating them to the winner of the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium Young Artist's Competition for a year. Since I decided to switch to Buffet, I'm now going to keep them and give out other prizes for that competition.

Hey Benjamin,
According to the serial number list on woodwind.org it's the very end of 1957 but maybe Vytas has a more accurate list???
