 Mendelssohn Concertpiece #2
Author: ken
Date:   2000-08-30 16:49

Hi Folks! I'm attempting to compile some basic, background information on this piece that would be suitable when introducing it in performance. I referenced the site databases and couldn't find anything or was it listed among his other compositions. (maybe I'm just blind) Also, I'm looking for a brief history on the basset horn as well.

Any suggestions/resources? Thx in advance!! <:-)

My first suggestion would be to research Grove's Dict. of Music etc for both questions, particularly re: Bassets. Our good books, Brymer etc will give you much info on the horns and perhaps its "your" Mend. that is discussed, very favorably!, on pg 230-1 of B's paperback. Luck, Don

Thx Don, you're advice is always informative as well as helpful to players on this board. I skimmed the Grove Dictionary and was able to cherry-pick a few sentences. As far as Jack Brymer, even though he's a household name, all I know about him is he's a good player, a Brit I believe, a few method books to his credit and I've heard a few isolated recordings. Could you please refresh my memory and tell me the title of his paperback? I'll need to purchase it...thx again. <:-)

I appreciate the kind words, Ken, J B's book is "Clarinet", a segment of the Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides series on many instruments, and should be available via Amazon.com., Barnes and Noble [.com?], most any larger library and/or bookstore, at least by ordering. Its copyright is 1976, 1st Amer. ed. 1977 , LC 77-275, my P Back is by Schirmer-Macmillan [purch'd in Aspen Colo!!]. A newer book by Colin Lawson "Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet" [??] is also excellent, somewhat diff. focus. Luck, Don

Ken, on the inside front cover of my copy of the concertpieces is a charming little story about the circumstances under which Mendelssohn wrote the pieces, which I used as an intro when I performed the pieces last year. I would have to dig them out to look it up, (the publisher is Breitkop, I think) but the story is that Mendelssohn wrote them on a personal bet, the prize being a dinner of apple strudel and dumplings. The bet was with Carl(?) Baerman and his son, as I recall.

Steven, absolutely splendid tale, that's the perfect teaser for my intro! That figures that Breitkopf publishers would insert a charming blurb like that. In my opinion, their edition of the Mozart (markings by Marcellus) is still the defining copy and all I'll ever use. I'm using the standard Eric Simon edition of the Mend which contains no biography other than the optional bassoon/cello parts. I'll email Ebble tonight and order that edition!

Outstanding Don!! Thank you so much for digging out your copies and taking the time to provide me with all the numbers/titles. I'll definitely visit Amazon, Barnes & Noble, maybe Borders too and order them. Certainly, worthwhile literature to maintain in one's library.

Thx again gentlemen to you both for your insightful posts, musical expertise and contribution in helping my recital be even more successful and memorable occasion. <:-))))))
