NicoleB -

My wife the Minnesotan say that the U. of Minnesota at Duluth is the largest, oldest branch of the university outside of the main campus in Minneapolis. It's of course COLD in the winter, with mosquitos the size of dinner plates in the spring. Their website is at <A HREF=http://www.d.umn.edu/>http://www.d.umn.edu/<A>, with the music faculty at <A HRF=http://www.d.umn.edu/music/faculty/index.html><A> The clarinet prof. is Theodore Schoen. I've heard his name, but know nothing more about him, though his credentials look good. Perhaps someone else, here or on the Klarinet board, knows more. What I do notice is that the main emphasis of the music program seems to be jazz.

St. Scholastica looks like a tiny college run by the Benedictine order and dedicated to a great degree to religious purposes. Look at their website at <A HREF=http://www.css.edu/>http://www.css.edu/<A>. There's also a quick summary from Peterson's at <A HREF=http://www.petersons.com/sites/005835si.html><A>.

The music faculty (<A HREF=http://www.css.edu/depts/music/music.html>http://www.css.edu/depts/music/music.html<A>) has several members who are highly respected in early music circles, including Penny Schwarze and Shelley Gruskin, and the testimonials look genuine. It's my opinion that you need to know about early music in order to understand where classical and contemporary music come from. If you have any interst at all in that kind of music, St. Scholastica could be ideal.

Do you live in or near Duluth? If so, you should get the concert schedules from both schools and go to hear some and get the feel of each campus.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

Hi Nicole!
I have lived in the Duluth area all my life. Ken is right about the cold and mosquitos around here, but Duluth is a beautiful city. If you like outdoor activities, such as skiing, biking, sailing and golf, this is the place to be and are within minutes of both campuses. Both UMD and St. Scholastica have great music programs along with music programs you can continue after college. Are you planning on majoring in music? If you are you may want to also check out the Univeristy of Wisconsin, Superior campus. The also have a wounderful music program along with great education department if you are thinking about teaching. I guess the question is do you like a large university setting or a small private campus setting. UMD and St. Scholastica are only about a mile apart. St. Scholastica has one of the best nursing and physical therapy programs in the country and UMD's medical school is also well respected. Best of Luck! By the way, where are you from?

Thank you both for your help. I am actually from Litchfield....central Minnesota. I have a cousin who goes to school at UMD. I was interested in going up there because I really think I would love the area. Especially for undergraduate school at least. I am planning on visiting all the colleges mentioned including U of Wisconsin Superior. Its such a hard decision. I am thinking of majoring in music but my downfall is that I never have had any music theory or experience in keyboard. There isn't anything offer in my high school in those areas. I haven't even taken private lessons on my chief instrument.....the clarinet of course. But what really got me interested was All-State band and the local orchestra I play in. I am thinking of music education and performance. Its so hard though. I guess I will have to go visit them and decide if they are places where I think I can live at for 4 years. I will tell you what happens. Thank you so much :)
