 Cleaning rubber clarinets
Author: Willie

I just got an old rubber clarinet that has the extra ring (low C) and a extra keys also. Is there a solution out there that I can use to get the oxidized rubber off and make it black again? I tried Westley's Bleach White that works great on softer rubber but it has no effect on the clarinet.

Willie:
Just had a idea. How about one of the many products on the market used to clean auto tires. Maybe wd 40.

WD 40 is actually a light oil specifically formulated to displace water ("WD" stands for "Water Displacing," and the "40" is because it was the 40th formula tried). I wouldn't think you'd want to get it into the delicate workings. Although it will lubricate, and excess can collect dust. However, Bob, you may be on the right track. How about a light application of one of the automotive leater, vinyl, and leather cleaners? Armorall makes some cleaners in addition to their famous protectorants (which contain plasticizers, and may be useful in maintaining the instrument).
