yes. the alto clarinet is slightly thinner then the bass clarinet, but also is in a different key.
the alto balances a clarinet choir very nicely.
the bass clarinet is the driving support.
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

Depends: Which alto? Which bass? Among the better brands, I think basses are more consistent, but a good alto (such as the Selmer pro model from the late 1980s) can have as strong a tone as a bass, depending on the reed and mouthpiece. When I want a big tone on my Selmer alto, a tone that compares with the other clarinets, I use a Selmer HS* mouthpiece with an alto sax reed.

Well said, Lelia, I had been thinking of saying essentially the same of my B Series Selmer alto. Here, our smaller bore cls with a good [somewhat wide tip, long lay] mp give all the volume I need. I like my Pomarico 3 glass, plenty of sound without losing tonality. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
