 Exercises when you aren't playing
Author: Tim

I would be interested to know of any exercises I could do when not actually playing my clarinet, that would improve my technique. I know of the exercise where you place your hand in front of you and blow, and also heard that general exercise was good too, especially sit-ups. But is there anything else that anyone here likes to do when not playing the clarinet? In particular, I would be most interested in breathing techniques.

There are a few.
1.Trumpeter's exercise: When you are walking, inhale air with your steps one, two, three,(chest up),and exhale one two, three. Each day try to increase number of steps and the amount of air. This is written in Claude Gaudon's book.
2.Fingering exercises:Percussionist method.
An exercise to make your right and left hands fingers move independently. There is a book published with photograph.
3.My personal method to improve projection:
I believe projection can be obtained when my exhaling stream of air reaches very far(i.e.longer air column) and not dispersant. A candle flame can be used. Every day put the candle flame farther away.
