Reed maintenance

I don't know if this topic has been up before here, which it probably has, but anyway.

What do you do to break in a reed?
What do you do to maintain the good reeds in your package?
I have heard people soaking them in alcohol, or in other strong mixtures to keep them from going bad. Any experience?
What should i look for when i look at the reed, when it comes to quality in the wood?

I have my own technique, but i would like very much to hear your experience in this matter.

...more helpfully: search both "curing" and "adjusting" reeds.
