Anyone know of a clarinet book which deals with the Gypsy Jazz/French/Hot Club style of clarinet playing? Even simple transcriptions would be cool.

Guess you'll just have to buy a few CDs and "wing it", Fargus, just like Sidney Bechet did.

There aren't any covering Django's clarinetists that I am aware of, but as Bob suggests, ear training is crucial for the aspiring improviser.
Having said that, I'd suggest any of the Benny Goodman and Buddy DeFranco transcription books for starters- and if you are serious, don't limit yourself to clarinet players, check out Louis Armstrong, Bix (yes, there are some books for them) and the deep history of saxophonists like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Benny Carter, Charlie Parker etc.
That's who Django's clarinetists were listening to.

''The Amazing Slow Downer, Transcribe etc. allow you to slow things down to where you can hear and play them.''
Tell me more about this please.
I had ''Slow Gold'' on a now departed laptop, which did the same thing. I also found, accidentally, on the same machine, a programme which would slow down DVDs and maintain pitch at the same time.
Unfortunately both programmes are now lost.

''check out or ask on this forum www.manoucheries.com/phpBB2''
I did thank you, but it's all in French. Unfortunately for me, it was my least successful subject in school.
Can you expand on ''audacity'' please? Is there a web address?
thanks,
n

You might want to have a look at a local Django nut's site ...
http://www.iandate.com/
... and if you bump into him, he'd give you plenty of tips.

What CDs did Sidney Bechet buy?

Hello,
I have the "Django Reinhardt Anthology", from the Goodman Group, exclusively distributed by Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation (as it says on the back cover). It's got a ton of Django tunes in it, with some Django solos transcribed, but no clarinet solos (or any other instrument, for that matter) transcribed.
I also have a different set of Django tunes in PDF, if anyone is interested.
Django tunes are deceptively difficult. I would recommend playing along with recordings of him to learn the style. Or, probably more practical, learn to play standard tunes in the "hot style". Good luck.

Try playing the Django solos, it'd be good practice.

The Rosenberg Trio came out last year with a CD called Roots, featuring clarinetist Bernard Berkhout, who gives a superb performance. Iris 3001-970 (distributed by Harmonia Mundi). Stochelo is also his usual amazing self.

Funny, but no one has mentioned Hubert Rostaing, one of my all-time favorite clarinetists, who performed with the Hot Club de France. There is a quite a lot of his solo and group performances available on CD.

audacity.sourceforge.net is the place to be.

I found a few cd's with django style clarinet , but never encountered a really interesting player .( most of the time it is disappointing to hear the clarinet after the guitar solos ) I heard some very good violin players though.
Anyone knows about good django clarinet players

By the way, there's a free audio editing application called "Audacity" (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) which will also let you slow the speed without changing the pitch. Among other things.
