 Quick way to disinfect mp
Author: Ron D

when we buy new mp's we try a number of them in order to find the perfect mp. Some order thru the many mail order firms that exist and have the advantage of cleaning them befor trying them out, however those of us that have access to good retail stores just go and try them out, when I shoped for a mp several months ago I tried over a dozen at IMS but now I am concerned about all the previous audition that thes mp"s received. I dont know if the stores clean them befor letting others try them and you cant be sure if they did.
At any rate is there some way to quickly disintect these mp's at the store that is quick, easy and effective?

Most stores have cans or aerosol pumps of Sani-Mist and anohter product by Roche-Thomas (Sani-Spray?) that they use to spray and wipe mouthpieces with. I think both contain alcohol. I'm not sure about the other ingredients.

I carry small packs of alcohol swabs I bought at a pharmacy, its label says it contains 70% isopropyl alcohol.
At one time though, when I used it to wipe a cheep bundy mouth piece which has the distinct smell of tar, some discoloration happened and the mpc turned whitish a bit.
Also, my friends think that I run the risk of scaring others if I carry those packs in my pockets since apparently those are what junkies use to disinfect before shooting up!

Here is the info from Roche-Thomas on their product, Sanimist.

"Sanimist, a topical antimicrobial,is designed to disinfect the mouthpiece and provide a cleaning refreshing agent that will remove residue build-up from the nstrument. Easy to use: apply the fine mist spray to the mouthpiece and let evaporate (about 45 sec.). To freshen and clean the inside of the instrument, spray liberally into the instrument and immediately swab. Sanimist evaporates quickly and assists in eliminating moisture. Sanimist is available in 2 oz, 8 oz and 32 oz refill."

Don't see qwhy you copuldn't buy the 2oz size & carry it with you. ;>) mw

Where can this item be purchased? I have never seen anything like this in the music stores. Thanks for the info.

In Houston area H&H Music, Mars, and Band Instrument Exchange all carry it. I'm sure IMS and WW&BW an others sell it too through mail order.

A similar product, available from Ferree's Tools

http://www.ferreestools.com

is Sterisol. It's a spray, also available as a concentrate for refilling the small spray bottle. Users should realize, though, that none of these cold sterilants will completely sterilize. For average use, they're fine (cold germs and the like can't survive very long on a dry mpc sitting in a display case, for instance), but if several people are trying out mpcs together (if the whole clarinet section from the band goes on a mouthpiece-hunting expedition in a pack, for instance), anybody who's sick should have the courtesy to abstain from spreading fresh, wet germs all over the equipment, because the cold sterilants won't completely eliminate that type of fresh contamination. My information comes from an EPA employee who has been investigating cold sterilants used by dentists.
