 HELP! Please
Author: dohnovan55

My mom past away a year ago and left me her Clarinet. I was wondering if any one knew where I can go to get it appraised. The only markiings on it are the words "OLYMPIC". She got it when she was 7 years old. So that would be around 1953. If anyone can help me out i would love it.

Thank you,

Ron

I assume that by "appraised" you mean valued.

It's highly unlikely that anyone would buy an expensive clarinet for a seven-year old. Therefore it's almost certainly a student instrument. These were produced in large numbers under many different brand names. They are of no significant value now; unlike violins, clarinets rarely get more valuable with age.

It is just conceivable that Olympic was a small, high-quality manufacturer that went out of business and has been forgotten, in which case a collector might be interested. But I very much doubt it.

Keep it, or put it on EBay. If you do the latter, don't advertise the fact here, as your post will be removed.

Hello,

Sorry for your loss.

I would find a local professional to look it over. They can tell you about its worth. Unfortunately, because of Ebay and other such businesses, values of instruments and most other things have lowered, perhaps to proper values, but lowered nonetheless. Best of luck.

Thank you very much. I do appreciate your words. My mom gave this to me, so I'll keep it and hand it down to my son who is 4.

Thank you again,

Ron
