Well I have a problem...I'm really REALLY hooked on becoming a music major, but in a way I dont know if I can handle it...I come from one of those under privlledged schools and our band program is nothing like some that I have seen...We dont even have a band hall..We have to rehearse in a over large portable!!! Most people in our band cant play worth anything, and I hate the fact that our band does not do anything...But enough about that...I started playing the clarinet when I was in 8th grade...Now im a sophmore in high school so its only been 2 years. All these other great clarinet players have been getting privite lessons since they just started. I made the region band (If any of yall know what that is...Im not sure if they have region auditions in other states) but for people that dont know what the region band is...It is where you compete with other high school students that are in your school region...It was my first time ever competing in any thing like that before...But It was the best thing I have ever experienced in my life...I played with a band that was atually REALLY GOOD...Not to put down my high school band or nothing. I dont know if anybody has ever heard of him but I have a band director..he was new this year and he is a professinal calrinet, flute and sax player...his name is Steven Gay...And if it wasnt for him...I would not be in the stage with music that I am today.
Well anyway, with yall knowing some about my music life, Do you think I could make it in the Music world???

If you really want it, go for it. I didn't start taking private lessons until 4 years after I started playing clarinet, and my high school had absolutely no band program. Scout out places to play and get experience, find a private teacher, and really apply yourself. I was not expecting to be able to get into a conservatory, but here I am, and I'm loving it. Good luck!

Search on this board for Paul W. Dodds. He's a teacher in the Dallas metro area and a frequent poster on this forum. He could possibly work with you or suggest alternative teachers in the Dallas area. Like klarenet says, "if you really want it, go for it."
At some point in time you'll realize that music (especially clarinet playing) is truly a "lifetime sport." I'm retired, and I play in Austin Symphonic Band and numerous other groups in the Austin area, and I'm having the time of my life! Go for it!
Congratulations, too, on making all region band. That already places you within a special group of players, so work to improve your skills and perhaps in a year or so you'll be writing to tell us that you've made All-State band!
